Default New ring gear onto carrier is loose

I have a new Richmond ring gear going into a dana 36 carrier. The gear slips on and off easily with little effort.

Everywhere I read it says to draw the gear on via the bolts or heat the ring gear.

The gear moves on the carrier flange about 0.002" radially before torquing bolts.

Can anyone comment on their experience with this?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Called Richmond, they said the gear ID is in spec and eye carrier is too small. Not sure how that happens?

The stock gear had to be tapped off.

Anyone able to measure a gear they may have off the car? Anyone able to measure the case od?

The ring gear ID appears to be 4.777.

Richmond really couldn't offer anything else after they said their gear is in spec?

I wouldn't be surprised at the fact that the ring gear is a "drop on" and if it weren't your install thoughts are in error. You do NOT use the ring gear bolts to draw the ring gear onto the carrier. You start all of the ring gear bolts by hand and then tap the ring gear to the carrier flange with a "dead-blow" or similar. Using the bolts to draw the ring gear to the carrier can stretch the bolts.

If the Richmond parts have the correct part #'s etched on them to match the gear set and the bolts start to the ring gear you've got correct parts. What are the number off of the GM gears you removed from the carrier?

I measured the ring as 4.774 that was using a pair of digital calipers.

Eutu, thanks. That is the stock Dana gear measuring 4.774

I'm not advocating using bolts to draw the gear on or any other practice at this time. However a large portion internet content suggests so. Regardless of that practice's validity, it demonstrates a rather tighter fit is usually present.

That is a Richmond Ring gear that measures 4.774 not a stock Dana, and it is for a series 2 carrier with the thick gear.

Your choices for gear kits for the D36 are very limited. Perhaps you should check the other for the ID of theirs and make a decision based on, "what's out there". The other thing to consider is because of the "thick ring gear" and the mass of the material maybe the ID is an accommodation required.

euti1984 has a carrier casting that I couldn't actually pinpoint the production range but maybe yours will. What is the casting number on the carrier that you have presently?
