We do have few LS swap threads.
use the search tool. FCsoldier, and ch@os have done it, and they are very happy with their DIY.
If you live in California, don't do it. It will be cheaper to buy a C6.

I just finished mine...almost...took 2x as long as I thought it would...probably 3x the money....but I'm too scared to add that up....
I Still think it was worth it.

Burning Brakes
I don't know what an 86 needs for the swap.
As for price I have somewhere between $9,000-10,000 in my 93 LS swap.
PS
No I don't have a thread detailing my swap because I got far too much flame for not doing exactly what others wanted me to do.

The 5.3 is a desirable LS type mill because of that fact it is a cast iron block vs. aluminum; yes it is a smaller displacement, but it allows for power adders with the added durability from stresses such as turbos, superchargers, etc. add to the bottom end; and the heads from other LS types of engines can be added to those blocks......
When Ford came out with the 4.6 supercharged engine for the 03/04 Cobra Mustangs in 03, they used a cast iron block for the boosted mill over the aluminum block 4.6 they had in the previous Cobras due to stress from boosted applications from a roots style blower......
So yes, 5.3 has its place in the market....it is a truck/SUV Vortec engine and they can be found much cheaper in the junk yard vs. LS1/2/3/6/7 mills.
Also the 6.2 Vortec is out there which yields higher displacement but they are not as cheap or available.

Melting Slicks
the now defunct magazine "CORVETTE FEVER" did this exact swap; Google "PROJECT C-FORCE" and see what you come up with; it was spread over several issues and was very detailed. And they went with the cast iron block because that's what the cars's spring rates and ride height was set up for. It seemed to be a very successful swap.
