My Dad used to open the plug gaps .010 for "improved fuel economy" on his points & condenser cars. Don't know if it worked or not for better mileage however the cars would not start in the winter until the plug gaps were closed up.
NKG iridium plugs work well as plug & play units.
Side gapping standard spark plugs will help.

:In my 383 Im running the stock gap of .035, but I went to a 1 step cooler plug because of the (10.5 to 1) compression Im running...If your running (11.5 to 1) compression then you should probably be running a cooler plug also.. The higher the compression, the cooler the plug should be.. I agree with most of the guys that there was no change noticed when I opened up the plug gap.......WW

I've had good luck with the NGK FR-5 "V-Power" plugs #7373, these are 1 step cooler then the stock plug.. My suggestion would be to run a set of these, then take a couple out after a few hundred miles to check them...If you do a search there are quite a few on here using this same plug that have close to the same compression as you...Depending on your setup you may end up running a cooler plug then this, maybe up to a number 7 heat range, but it's trial and error so take it slow and read your plugs.........Check to make sure these plugs fit your Procomp heads.....WW

Here is the NGK spark plug tech article, everyone should know the things written in this 5 page article..It tells you how to read plugs, and the things that can occur if the plugs are to hot or to cold........WW

I am currently running Accel copper core 416S (shorties) at stock gap... do you still recommend those NGK's?

NGKs are what I use, I have had good success with them, there a quality plug...I have never used Accel shorty plugs, do you have a header clearence problem with standard length plugs?? If you do, then you have to use the shorty plugs, you have no choice...Just keep in mind that with NGK plugs the higher the number , the cooler the plug...With Accel plugs , the higher the number the hotter the plug... I know this is screwed up, and azz backwards, but it's the way the 2 different companys rate their plugs.. If your plugs are fouling and getting deposits on them, then they're to cold, If your plugs look like there melting or burning up on the ends then the plug is to hot...Its your job to find that perfect medium where they look just right like in the article I posted above, no matter what brand plug your using.....I can tell you one thing for sure, with 11.5 to 1 compression you should be using a plug cooler then stock, the brand you use is up to you...The only plugs I have used that I didn't like at all were "Autolite".......To answer you question about plug gap...If you want to figure the widest plug gap you can run. Open the gap a little at a time , then when the motor starts running bad or missing, back off to the last gap where it ran good.......WW

I'm gonna pull some plugs next weekend and get a feel for their condition and then we'll see what heat range I need. What heat-range would a 416s be? Is the "6" the heat range you think?

Yes, the 416s is a number 6 heat range, the 414s is a number 4 heat range and so on..Don't forget with Accel plugs , the higher the number , the hotter the plug...You didn't answer my question, do you need shorty plugs because standard length plugs hit your headers???...WW

Thank you for your help so far.

Your welcome , glad to help...The reason I asked about the plug length was because if you can use a standard length plug you would have a larger selection of plugs to chose from....
