Default FIRING ORDER- NO. 1 ON THE DISTRIBUTOR

Ok I have my Haynes book and am well aware of the firing order but
how can you tell which is the number 1 on the distributor ?? Ever since I changed my wires cap rotor and coil, the car is idling like I have a lumpy cam with gas just shooting out of the exaust.

Use an Ohmeter to ring out the wires; likely two are crossed.

Crank the engine till the timing mark is at TDC and see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing at the left front wire terminal.

Actually there is a good diagram in the Haynes manual. I used it when I pulled my cap and replaced all the wires. Take your time and you should be OK. Mine came out perfect.

Number 1 is where ever you want it to be, you just have to set the distributor in for that position

Assuming you have the distributor in the stock position, number 1 is just forward of the housing for the wires that lead to the cap

Right.

The engine doesn't car where you place the #1, as long as all the remaining wires are in the correct order AND the rotor tip is pointing at the #1 when the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

I'm betting that you have two wires crossed. That's where I'd check first to solve the bad idle problem

Hope this helps.

Jake
