I think it's close. Does the pattern match the original wear pattern? Hard to tell from the pics.

From what I can tell the pattern thats worn in to the gears is much broader and covers the most of the teeth on both sides.

Thanks for the link, I already read it and several more. It seems that no matter witch direction I adjust it does not seem to get as good a pattern as most pics that I see most likely do to the gears being used.

From what I am seeing and reading I should move the pinion closer but when I do I get a pattern that tell me to increase backlash, But then it seems I have to increase to over .010 or more.

Did the used pinion (2.59) still have the rear bearing and shim installed on it? If it did, did you reuse it OR did you use the one that was on the pinion you removed? What are the numbers scribed on the ends of the pinion? A used gear install will most likely be a 'whiner' anyway, it's very difficult to avoid.

No bearings came with the used gears, I have new timken bearings and for adjustment I am using dummy bearings that I already have. .183 is on the end of the pinion and stamped on the ring.

Use the thickness of the shim that is on the 3.07 that you removed as a start OR for comparison to what you have. How close is that dimension? Generally speaking the use of what you removed from the 'take-out' is considered a very good start. If both gear sets are Dana I would have expected a +X, 0 or -X on the pinion and then you could have used the chart in either a Dana assembly manual OR the FSM for comparisons.

The coast side looks bad, unless you didn't rotate it enough to get a good mark put on it I'd keep adjusting.

This did not have 3.07 in it, it had a trashed 3.73 that was put together very badly, they actually ground the pinion shaft to get the bearing on.

OK here are some more pics, backlash is between .006 and .008 taken at several spots around the ring gear.

I cant seem to get a good reading on the coast side

It's not bad, it may whine a little on light coast or float. My stock 2.59's did that, not sure of the history of them though.

I am going to play with the adjustment a little more and see what I get.

Took it for a ride, everything seems real good. I am chasing a clunking noise that I get when I come to a stop, Last year I changed all the bushings and u-joints and the noise was still there, I was hoping when I rebuilt the rear that would take care of it, when I have a chance I will remove the spare tire and carrier and stick a camera under there.
