Default 86 EGR pipe insulation. .....

Hi. Just got done doing a Engine refresh on my 86. Polished the plenum and runners, some cool red powder coated pieces for color.

What's sticking out like a sore thumb is the insulation on the EGR pipe. I bought some new stock tin foil type like the original, but a month later it looks like **** Already.

Does anyone here have any creative ideas or solutions? Since I have a red theme going I was going to buy a roll of red exhust header tape. What do you think? Any opinions, ideas would be most appreciated!

Check eBay...."EXHAUST PIPE WRAP".
Comes in various sizes..... 1" easy to apply.
Use copper wire or hose clamp to secure ends.

Joe that does look cool.

I just bid on this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201332223027?_trksid=p2055119.m570.l4451&_trkparms=gh1g%3DI201332223027.N5.S2.M327.R1.TR9
That was going to be my next question, how to secure it. I guess I'll get some hose clamps from the auto parts store? I don't have any copper ...........

Here is a picture of my engine so you can see what I'm trying to accomplish:

Believe it or not........that is a 1 month old EGR pipe shield I just got from Ecklers. The inside is holding up, but all of the outer layer silver foil has burned off. What a POS product! $15 down the crapper......

Cool. I just read a tutorial on Bike header wrap insulation. They recommend these cool stainless tie wraps:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STAINLESS-STEEL-ZIP-TIES-STRAPS-WIRE-POSITIONING-DEVICE-CLAMPS-REPAIR-LOCKING-/151343575589?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item233cc7b225
Probably over kill for the little EGR pipe but I'll save it for a re wrap in the future........

I put the header wrap on mine and secured it with stainless steel hose clamps at the top and bottom:

The seam for the foil heat shield is on the "wrong" side, so I made a new hole for the EGR temperature switch in the opposite corner. Now the seam is hidden:

I used header wrap but ran 2 peices leghth wise, then stapled along the edges, I had some silver ceramick header paint and painted with that. I thought about just coating the tube with the ceramick header paint but was not sure how well it would protect from the heat and hold up.

Have you checked for NOS at the dealers? I bought one for my 87 a few years back.

I would have been back sooner, but it's those damn, "made in china," flux capacitors. (now, that's bad! )

I went with both. The silver foil heat shield is on top of the header wrap.

The problem with the heat shields is that the Velcro fasteners get roasted by the heat:

Ahhhhhh. Good Idea. looks stock. Too bad the GM design team couldn't think of it...... That probably would have saved my brand new replacement that now looks like crap. I'm liking the Idea of this Red header Tape though. I painted the EGR valve with some heat resistant brake pad paint I had left over. I'm told that will help prolong the life of the Header wrap. Should be here in a few days off ebay.

Hands down the best way to insulate the EGR pipe. Nice and clean and will not fall apart. Don't waste ANY MONEY on a wrap from any vendor.

The original design did not use the Velcro. The insulator slipped on over the pipe before it was installed. The Velcro was the (bad) idea of some aftermarket company trying to replace the stock piece.

, velcro is not only a bad idea, it's really kind of stupid in a high heat environment. you can melt that stuff with a hair dryer. for some reason, I'm thinking originals were stapled - right, wrong, ???
