Default Any negative results from smog pump removal

I am thinking of removing the smog pump on my 85. Has anyone done this and had negative results?

the first thing I have to ask, is why do you want to remove it? if you think you're going to gain any kind of performance, forget it. you might get a couple HP gain, but nothing you'll feel by the seat of your pants. seems like a whole lot of effort for nothing.

If it's to free up room in the engine bay you'll get a little...but not a whole lot.

And they make headers with the smog tubing on them, which still free up a ton of room (more than just deleting the pump and keeping a plugged off stock exhaust will at that).

The only reason I was thinking of it was to clean up the engine compartment -- maybe not a reasonable reason and to eliminate the need to replace the pump again. I agree it might be a bit of work, just a thought.

Get a good AIR Pump eliminator like the TPiS product. You will need a slightly shorter serp belt. You can plug the manifold tubes with just a 1/2" NPT pipe plug. Remove all of the rubber hose and remove the tube that goes back to the cat. You can plug that end by simply crimping the tube where it enters the cat. Plug the vacuum hoses too.

You won't see much of anything in the way of a performance increase. But you will see a lightening of the wallet.

it's worthwhile if your installing headers too...it does clean up the engine bay but hp gains are minimal, and usually you'll need a smaller belt..

Thanks for this information. I think I will stay as is unless I decide to install headers -- which I doubt I ever will. Thanks.

I removed mine and it added more room, looks better, and any HP gain is a gain so it's a win win. You do not need to pay for the eliminator kit, just get a shorter belt. There are other threads out there that give the PN. Oh, one more thing, the less parts on the car, the less chances something will break or go wrong. I took off cruise control, smog, went to true dual exhaust, and have nice street car running the crossfire still and making great power. Showed up a new Mustang yesterday.

I too removed the AIR and EGR system on my 87 and run true dual exhaust. I do have an aftermarket chip/tune which did the EGR delete.

I used the TPIS delete, the only issue is you need to remember the serpentine belt with the TPIS delete is 1 inch shorter.

thanks, at one time I was going to chrome everything, but i'm now in the U>P of Michigan and with few car shows up here in the boon docks, i'm driving it more and it's a pain to keep clean....but lots of fun in the curves and hills of the upper peninsula as opposed to the flat and straight roads full of street lights in S Florida....cars on the roads are not a problem, just deer...
