Need a new fuel pump, which one???
My fuel pump is going and I need to replace it. I'm in the process of building my '86L98 engine up with a Ling 219 cam, Ported intake, AFR190 heads, headers, 24Lb SVO injectors, ect...........What's the best fuel pump out there??
AC Delco?
Borg Warner?
Holly?
Grand National?
Walbro?
???
Also need price and part numbers and the best place to buy it??
Thanks,
Mark

I have an intank fuel pump that might interest you. I don't know the part number but it's made by Bosch. My F/P has less than 6K use. You can see this same F/P at http://www.tpis.com website. You'll need to buy a F/P mounting kit that sells for $40 or build your own clamp system. My price is $75 plus shipping. Even if you don't buy the fuel pump I'm selling, perhaps you should look into the Bosch fuel pumps.

I put that same pump on my car and have had good service from it. Here is a shot of it clamped to my in tank bracket. I set the stock pump on top of it for this picture so you can see how much more substantial the Bosch pump is. I had to tack that half round metal bracket back on with my welder, I broke it off while opening it up a bit for the larger pump. Then I used two of those screw hose clamps to strap it to the bracket. I didn't need any kit to install it. Just a section of hose as you can see looped here. You want the loop of hose to quiet the pulsing of the pump. The stock pump has a little pulsation damper on top of it fitting it to the metal pipe. That pulsation damper doesn't fit the large Bosch pump.

Hmmmmmmmm that sounds like a great deal on the pump M2001, you really got me thinking. That might be the one................. but I'd like to hear other idea's, what's the story on the Walbro pump? How much does one cost for an '86 and would I need any special bracket for it? Part numbers?
Thanks
Thanks

Check out Racetronix.com. They have an awesome kit for your car.

Another possibility is a stock GNX fuel pump. If I remember correctly, it is a direct replacement for a stock Vette pump, but has more flow.

Can I ask you how you knew your pump was going out? I have posted a problem on the forum yesterday with hard starting, unless I floor it, and members are suggesting it may be my fuel pump. (already replaced injectors.. Would a FP meter tell you for sure? Could it still be a fuel filter? Thanks for any help..

You should buy a good fuel pressure guage. Then, screw it onto the fitting on the fuel rail and lay it up on your windshield and tape it there with a piece of duct tape. Then you can turn on the key and watch the pressure. Then you can also watch it while you drive to see if it holds pressure under full throttle. That's how I found my pump going bad. Above about 3500 rpm's the pressure would just drop off dramatically.

My Vette is holding "0" fuel pressure. I have already replaced the injectors and the fuel filter. I also bought a new adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
Also upon startup my Vette takes awhile starting.
I'll have the new pump installed this weekend and let you know of my results.

I had the Bosch(LPE Sells it under an accel pn) It did NOT last. I almost went crazy trying to find out why I was mis-firing also. A friends car had one and it got really noisy and wasnt holding pressure. It's just my opinion..but I don't think they're a good-durable pump.
I have had tremendous luck with the vortec truck pump...sold to me and recommended by Jeff Kopp. It flows more than the GN unit and is a little less $ I believe. You know my car's combo...it works well for it. Think about that one. Good luck.

Re: Need a new fuel pump, which one??? (Mr. Magoo)
Mr. Magoo,
I just did this Fuel Pump, remove and replace, on my '86 Vette about a month ago.
I used AC Delco parts, due to the fact that I got 150K from the original unit (I'm the original owner), plus the fact that I didn't want any 'surprises' by going to another manufacturer.
I'm very pleased with the results, and here are the part numbers that I replaced:
P/N: 25094266 Fuel Dampener list cost: $21.55
P/N: 25091503 Gasket list cost: $14.28
P/N: 25116163 Fuel Pump list cost: $113.32
P/N: 25055455 Strainer list cost: $ 8.42
These are GM parts and part numbers from my local Chevy dealership.
Perhaps you have a dealership near you that will give you a discount, or if you want...try contacting Jeff Kopp.
If you can wait on the parts to be shipped...this might save you a few dollars...should you not 'know anyone' in the parts department of your local Chevy dealer.
This too, is a very easy removal, and installation effort.
Two hour job...max, and that's taking your time.
Good Luck!!
John

Re: Need a new fuel pump, which one??? (UDLUV12)
Thanks John,
I ended up going with the Walbro GSS307M Pump with the Plug 'N Play wiring harness from Racetronix. It was a little expensive at $160.00 but I did some research and it seems to be a great pump, even more than I'll ever need.
Here's a pic:
I should have it this weekend. :)

Good choice Magoo! I have the Walbro 307 running fine on my supercharged 383 so it should work great for you.
I'd already rewired everything so I just got the pump for $119; you got a nice kit there for only $40 more. Racetronix is right about supplying good voltage/current to the thing with heavy wire; the factory stuff is laughable.
