Default 94 LT1 secondary O2 sensor

Ok, we have all known for a long time that the 94-95 LT1's have three oxygen sensors, the two primary ones, and a secondary one on the passenger side. The cars are OBD1, with the 16 pin connector. I always heard the 3rd sensor was some sort of test bed for the upcoming OBD2 1996 cars. Was it just to see if it would fit there? Was it required to meet some sort of emissions compliance thing for the upcoming model? I use Datamaster to help tune my car, and it doesn't display any readings from it. So...if I get full length headers and 3" x-pipe (ARH), do I have to have them weld in a bung for the 3rd sensor, or can I just take it out and leave the harness there (or cut it)? Just wondering...

They did not have to put it on to see if it would fit. On my 94 I heard that it did report back but with little effect so I just replaced the front two runs much better never set a code. Not sure what would happen if it was not hooked up.

I threaded a plug into the bung for the rear sensor closed on my 94, never set a code or ran differently. I just zip tied the harness to the wire loom. Seems the OBDI PCM could care less about what that sensor is reporting - or not reporting.
