Hood emblem
Hello all,
1987 Corvette coupe 57000 miles automatic.
I just purchased a new hood emblem to replace my worn original and am looking for any advice on removing the old one. There are no threads on the emblem posts so I assume that the old one pries out. There is also no access from the underside of the hood. Any tips or suggestions before I begin so I don't ruin the paint on the hood.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

not sure if all years are the same, but on my 85, and I'm thinking my (first) 90, but the emblem is held on with two (2) thread cutting or self threading nuts. (on the posts) -
double check the underside of the hood for a couple of access holes.
I used a 10mm socket (1/4" drive) with a short extension. DO NOT PRY ON ANYTHING UNTIL YOU ARE POSITIVE OF THE ATTACHMENT METHOD. I'm not 100% positive, but later years may be held on with double sided emblem tape, in addition to the two nuts. memory is a little fuzzy, and can't swear to it, but my 96 might have been the tape method.
BTW, be careful removing, or for that point installing the two nuts. it's easy for at least one of them to fall off the socket and go MIA. I'm sure the factory used a magnetic socket for installation, but that's something the average guy just doesn't have laying around his toolbox.

First try to heat the glue backing with a hair dryer or heat gun, then use Waxed dental floss. Clean up residual glue with WD-40. If you don't have a magnetic socket, put a wadded piece of gum to hold the nut in place so it does not fall out. Once it catches on the thread it will release itself.
