MAF sensor on an '88 bad?

MAF sensor on an '88 bad?
I have an 88 with 94k miles that's ran great since I got it nine years ago. The service engine light just came on and it started idling rough. Checked and have code 34, so I printed out and followed the pdf Agent86 posted.

Cleared the code, disconnected maf sensor and started the engine. Service engine light came on, still idles rough and now has only a code 33. PDF says to replace MAF sensor. The small wires inside are not broken. Is there anything else to check before buying the new sensor? I don't mind spending the money if need be. Advance has two listed... a BWD for $168 and Cardone for $212

You can clean the current MAF and see if it's just dirty. Use a special MAF cleaner only, which you can get at any parts store. Remove the MAF and spray it with the cleaner. Keep in mind the wires in it are thin so use care. Also check to see if any are broken. Let it dry and then re-install after clearing the code(s).

Highly recommend replacing the two relays at the same time as the MAF itself.

Thanks for the replies...
Ok, after going thru the steps in the pdf file, I had removed the sensor to inspect the small wires...which are still intact. I reinstalled the sensor and cleared the code... (33 thrown when MAF sensor unplugged), restarted the car and needless to say got the service engine light. Shut it off and shorted A and B on the ALDL. Now when I turn the key on, I'm not even getting the initial 1-2 flashing and the fan doesn't turn on as before when pulling codes.

If you go ahead with a replacement MAF, check for some better prices. You can also get the two relays there, especially if you buy everything at once which saves on shipping.
I'm also seeing an intermittent Code 34 on my '87. I bought a can of CFC MAF Sensor cleaner at a local Autozone and sprayed the interior of the MAF. That did help the idle somewhat although I think I still have a small vacuum leak. The SES light didn't come back on after the MAF cleaning but I didn't leave the MAF harness off to check for a Code 33. So I'll have to drive the car over time to see if a Code 34 comes back.

Update...
Ok, found no vacuum leaks and I had recently cleaned the TB.
Bought a can of CRC and cleaned the MAF. Seemed to help the idle a little but still threw code 34.
Replaced the two relays first since recommended to replace with MAF anyway. Still got the code. So, checked all connections for continuity....all good. Just installed a Cardone reman MAF from Advance (about $160 after core). No codes, idles smooth and throttle seems more responsive.
Thanks for the replys...good to have it back on the road.
