how do u remove the torque converter from the input shaft.
i have the trans out on the floor. need to pull the tc off and put new one on. (at least, i think that is what was making the noise, it wasnt a cracked flywheel).
my tc is on pretty good. ive googled it and seen many people install a tc, but nobody takes it off other than a video of using a truck to pull it off with a chain. id rather not do that lol.

Sit down in front of the tranny. Put one foot on each side of the bellhousing, Grab the converter with two hands. Pull toward you and wiggle. It should come out.

with 383vett...should pull off. Be aware that it is heavy and filled with trans fluid which makes it heavier. It should just slide off.

But , I personally had 1 instance where the convertor was locked into the Tranny. I couldn't get it off, I took it to a Tranny shop and they couldn't get it off. Very rare, but it can happen.
I had to dump that Tranny.

ok ive been at it for 20 minutes sitting in front of it and it isnt coming off. i have a rubber mallet and its got a bit of up and down wiggle to it. maybe 3/8ths inch up and down play. it started with maybe 1/8th inch play so i guess its a bit looser but its not coming out nice not even close.
could this be the reason why it was making the noises that it was?

one thing i notice is that when i do get it off partially, or least if feels like i can wiggle it out about 3/8" it will not rotate anymore. like it locks. if i use the mallet to bang it in then it will rotate again.

It was on my old IROCZ original 700R4.

only had the lunch hour to try and get it off, but I called the tranny shop and they said probably due to overheating it Seni welded itself to the input shaft and I will be doing a pump bushing and seal job as well. I'm going to take the converter to the guys I'm buying a new one from and they're going to cut it open and will just make sure that the converter has a problem.

wtf!!!!!!!
its totally stuck. i obviously have a pump bushing problem and that must be what has been making the noise.
doing this in a plastic bin just isn't working. i don't have a lift or a hook to hoist trans up from rafters but i may have to rig it up.
any ideas? i've made about 1/4 of progress.
u can see the small lines as i pry it out bit by bit. this is 3hrs of work. wtf.

I think you should scrap the Tranny and convertor.
Look for another 700R4 and swap your tailshaft on it.
If it's not a Vette 700r4, then you have to cut the output shaft a bit.

I've never removed a torque converter, but i've sen video sometimes when installed need to rotates a little to properly engage input shaft.
I would try to grab it an pull and rotate sametime

I told him i had this one dropped out and he didn't seem to change his viewpoint.
then he told me to bring mine in for a full rebuilt to the tune of 2500$.
lol. not happening so i'll continue working this over and eventually get it out. then i'll replace/rebuild the pump, get a new tc and re-install.
one of the more seasoned guys i spoke with said that it sounds like it got very hot and there is a plastic part that melts into the snout of the torque converter and locks it in. I have no idea but i'll find out.
im considering attatching it to the hitch of both my trucks and pulling it off. I saw it done on a youtube video which i thought was really redneck. but now i find myself needing the method myself lol.

I called a trans shop and he said the chances of finding a 700r4 that would fit in my 85 vette were slim to none.

I've sometimes had a little trouble, but who never had...
Also about TC getting off, i don't know how its made around contact point, so its up to you, but try with a propane torch to warm that area?

You need a rebuild anyway , and trust me, a quality rebuild will install all new heavy duty parts in it (clutch packs, servo, shift kit).

Before you go the redneck route.
Try fabbing up a plate to your TC to attach a slide hammer. It will give you alot more control than yanking it off with your truck.
