Default 84 'vette Black Module

Does anyone know what this black module is for? It is under the passenger dash? I am buying a wiring diagram manual soon.

Sorry for the noobie question.

Yes - I'd guess that the "blur" is maybe a 16039969 and another 4 digit number that would be a date code.
