Default 1984 Base Z51 Koni shocks

I currently have KYB that work fine

I would like to change the front out to Koni shocks.

The Koni shocks are obsolete for the rear 8040 1016 and front 8040 1015 and they were adjustable if removed from the car.

I have heard that the later model 1989 fronts have be used 8241 1097SPORT

These are adjustable without removal from the car

However, they are different they have a donut mount on the bottom and I have the forked plate.

And access to the adjustor from the top is limited

Has any one made this conversion?

Drilling an access hole in the top, might be an option for the top

What do I do for the bottom?

You've "heard" from where/who?

I believe you've been victimized by some "very generic STOCK" image use by some vendor. All C4 fronts use a T-bar (my terminology) for front lowers. Since that Koni application is specific I'd think the t-bar is fixed to the shock. I very seriously doubt that the shock could be used for anything other than '89+ UNLESS you modified dramatically the chassis aspect of the mount.

I'd say you could "forget it"!!!

Thanks for the prompt response and yes the image was on a supplier web-site

I source was from Koni, they said that they had heard that the 1989 version on the front was used to replace the 1984 version that they no longer make for front applications

Thanks for the help, I will give it a go.

I was very sure of that. The issue is the fit! Using some very generic published specifications (by dimension) an early shock is 13.78 (extended), 10.31 (collapsed) with a 3.46 (stroke). A later '89+ is 13.58/9.61 with a 3.98 stroke.

What are the specifications of the Koni?

Specifications vary by vendor for sure, the T - mount will work but you would need minimum early shock grommets for the top I'd think.

Does Koni say they will work?

Ordered and installed.
I did have to dremel tool to allow access to the adjustment.

One turn CCW and the car rides much smoother especially on bumps, expansion joints, and pot hole.

Two turn CCW the car rides like 84 Z51.

Now I need to find the rears.

I've got an almost new set of adjustable Konis in my attic that were used for a short time. $125 shipped.
