Default 93 6 speed shifter problem!

It's been a nightmare for 6 mo. Working on my C4

I was just ready to take a ride around the block and realized I didn't put every thing back together on the shifter.
I had the engine and trans out and after 6 mo. It took awhile to figure it out.
I'm still stumped on how the reverse pull up works. It used to have a spring type feel puting it in reverse.
I have the round piece with the allen screw that slides down and tightens on the small diameter steel shaft but im doing something wrong because I cant find reverse.
Anyone familiar with this?

That's the shaft that the allen screw tightens up on but then what?
The shaft can be pulled out!
It seems like it should attach to something in the trans.

are you using the reverse lockout handle 10079757. Also, check out item 12 in diagram below.

the spring is on the bottom side of the shifter. just above the actual lockout bar stock. the spring pressure keeps the lockout. fully seated. the lockout ring on the top side. dis-engages. the fully seated position. allowing the lockout bar to clear the gate.
