Default Thinking about heads

I've been collecting parts for Tom Wong to put in my 1989. So far I've bought an Edelbrock high flow manifold, ASM high flow runners, a 74211 cam, 1.6 Scorpions roller rockers, new roller lifters, valve springs, water pump & hoses. Going to buy Melrose headers soon. Car has the 700R4, 3.07 rear. Tom is going to prep a short block, new pistons etc.
I've been looking at the AFR catalog(drooling) and wonder which heads. The 180cc eliminator heads have 75 and 65cc chamber options and a 65cc TPI/TBI head with 72° bolt angle. The 195cc heads have the same options. Are the heads for the TPI/TBI the ones? Just looking to end up with a strong, high torque Street engine. I'll just sell my old engine to recoup some beans. Wife says...just get the heads. Guess I should, eh?

It is always wise to listen to your wife when she is telling you to spend money on yourself.

Call AFR or your engine builder and ask. Give them the cam specs and how you want to use your vette. I'd think about a torque converter too.

They make a 180 with the L98 plug angle would work great with what youre doing.
Dont get sucked into bigger heads for tpi. You can have the flat mill them down also tpi421vette here can get you set up with a pair

I would certainly get Tom's opinion about what heads to buy given what you have already purchased. He will need to know the cam specs and that you are going with 1.6 rockers. Can you run true duals in Oregon? Or will you have to go thru the state's emissions testing? If you can run true duals, the exhaust should be a 2.5" minimum, an X-pipe and good mufflers.

What will the engine displacement be? Stock 350? .030 over for 355? Stroker to 383? That will make a difference too.

It will also help to do port matching on both sides of the runners. Will Tom be burning a chip for the engine?

My 85 was a very close build to what your putting together. I had AFR 180 low compression heads. 74211 cam but the SuperRam intake, runners and plenum. Car ran consistent 107 MPH in the 1/4 mile at 13.2. My son upgraded to the AFR 195 high compression heads and added headers. He took it to PIR in Portland about 6 weeks ago and got it down to 12.6. He still needs to have Tom fine tune the setup. The base block is a ZZ4. I pulled the short block down and had the rotating assembly balanced to .4 grams. So it spins very easy.

See signature below for more specifics.
