Default Can you help me identify these heads? AFR 220's

Hi guys. Saw an add for an engine for sale with these heads. These are the pre eliminator heads right? Anyone know anything about these heads? I thought I heard that these were a little hard on valve train but that could be way off...

AFR 220s for the Gen2 SBC. I run similar heads on my '87 (non-LT) with 1206FP intake, but with shaft rockers. I knew the valvetrain had to carry serious load when paired with very large SR cam, so opted for the better valvetrain. Mine worked quite well.

Nice! I've heard these are awesome with f/I or rpm; I'd be looking for both. I need lots of rpm to get the blower rpm up.

Did you change any of the valve train or are you using the stock valves?

I had mine custom built by AFR when I did them (worked with Tony Mamo, who was the head guy at AFR at that time). I needed clearance for 0.750 lift and my springs were SR with considerable pressure. mine were the CNC version with additional hand polish after the CNC. They really are a work of art.

I do not recall the flow numbers, but they were VERY good for Gen1 SBC heads. I am not sure if further development has occurred since that time. The shaft rockers were a MUST for those heads with a large SR cam.

What diameter are the valves, that could tell you what gen perhaps
Solid roller you can use 7/16 studs depending but shafts sure are nice, no flexing no movement stable valvetrtain. Choked when I bought mine but worth every nickel. Investing in high quality pushrods can help out also.
Without looking #s are comparable with the 210 comp ports but upstairs best the 300 mark on the intake and 230ish on the exh.
Call Jeremy at AFR or Jim Barth aka tpi421vette here.
Been wanting a set of those for a long time to replace my Dart 230s.
Anyways worlds better than any GM ported head

I agree that Jim is quite knowledgeable on these topics. We used to bounce lots of ideas off each other back in the day.

BTW, I replaced a set of massively ported (much welding) 113 D-ports from Lingenfelter with my AFR220s.

And I thought the CNC'ed with polishing touch up (like mine) were called "competition port", not "Eliminator". It has been a few years....

Eliminator was the new revised castings that came out a number of years back. The original heads were all based off the L98 casting.

The eliminator heads typically say 210/220 on the end of the head and have a bar code sticker. I have 210s on my 412" SBC.

The LT1 heads may be a little different, though.

Thanks for all the info. I don't believe that they ever did an "eliminator version" of the 220 for the Lt. There just wasn't a huge amount of demand.

I have a call into the guy about the stuff; I'll be curious what he says is done because he said that there is a lot of $$$ tied up.

I'm in CA so there is a possibility that Tony may have spec'd the heads out or even did further porting on them.

Those are definitely an older casting. Currently AFR doesn't make a LTX 220 cc head. Right now they make the 210 and from there they go straight to the 227 head. But they are still a decent head for a LT build. And with additional work, they may be a really good head.
