Default HELP: Gas gauge not working

I am working on my 1985. The gas gauge does not work. When i first start the car all the led segments light up fine. Then do dark.
I am thinking I have an issue with the sending unit.

Anyone else ever have this problem? What fixed it for you?

Also do I need to drop the gas tank to replace it? Someone told me I can do this thru the top by removing the gas filler door and rubber filler cover

Any help would be great

Thanks

Dave

Can ONLY be done through the top of the tank and is part of the sender BUT I'd think you could check the dash aspect of it by just applying the "resistance" value the cluster is looking for from the connector at the tank unit. If you have a FSM it mentions the values at various sender levels. Should be very easily duplicated. There's many threads regarding the cleaning of the rheostat used for fuel level etc.

I saw your WTB and it might be nice to locate one but maybe do all of the diagnotics first!1
