2021 C4 of the Year - Modified Finalist

Default Thank You Willie-Bob's C4 Parts

I want to thank the guys over at Willie-Bob's C4 Parts for helping me out, My 90 C4 seized up the air pump just after I left the Carlisle fairgrounds. I gave them a call and they had 3 of them with them so I called a roll back to take me back to the fairgrounds and they installed one of there used ones for me.

Good on them for helping you get back on the road. Nice to see someone going the extra mile.

I've heard more than on report on cardone remanufactured smog pumps - nothing good. one more reason to pick up a good, used, spare OE pump, or, if someone can find one, a NOS assembly. a parts stash, especially for "one year only" or OE discontinued parts, new or used, is always worth having.

Glad you got it fixed. This is the first time I've ever heard of that air pump seizing up from any C4 owners. Did it give you any signals that it was going bad?

I though I heard a noise just as I was going to leave the fairgrounds stopped and looked under the hood but did not see anything that was obvious so went on my way then well heading down 944 I felt the power steering go out and then pulled over and shut her down. Looked under the hood and the pulley was at an angle, the belt was off and the smog pump was starting to turn black. The last one that I replaced was making a squeaking noise and was starting to show some play in the shaft.

I removed my belt and went over all my accessories and the bearings in the alternator are starting to go so I am going to order a new one.

I see from your profile you have a 1990. you may want to consider an upgrade from a cs130 alternator to the later cs144.

pretty much a plug and play - some very minor rework required. here a write-up from forum member crowz, that pretty much sums it up -

Thanks for the info but I am going to stick with the stock replacement. $106.99 1 year warranty http://www.autoanything.com/alternat...emy-alternator

autozone has one for $151.99 limited lifetime warranty http://www.autozone.com/batteries-st...?checkfit=true

both are new not rebuilt.

also, check out summit racing...

free shipping over $99

FWIW, on my first 90, I purchased the autozone duralast gold - new with lifetime warrenty - a nice piece of hardware. I owned the car for 2 years after installation before I sold the car, but no issues. kept track of the car for a couple more years, and as I recall, no alternator issues.

I just noticed something with the autozone site - they list the output at 95 amps whereas the OE rating was 105 amps - some thing to consider.

have you considered rebuilding you original (with an upgrade)?

One thing to keep in mind on the swap over. The reason to do it is to keep from having to replace the alternator all the time. The stock one is going to fail again. From my experience it will be soon too.

Based on reviews and the warranty I decided to go with the one from autozone.

- I recall reading somewhere that OE cs130 alternators, had a 4 year life expectancy, whereas, the factory warranty on the new car was 3 years. coincidence - ???
