Thanks for the details!

And so far it has been pretty solid after the second rebuild.
I never had the return springs in my trans, but i did install the return springs and the drum check valve supplied in the transgo 700p rebuild kit.

i also installed the larger reverse boost valve along with the .500 boost valve.
Kolene steels and red clutches throughout.
oem 5 pinion front and rear along with the carriers, front and rear sprags replaced with the better later parts..

Only complaint so far has been a pretty violent 3-2 and 2-1 manual down shift, like i have to make sure my rpm is under 1500 or my tires screech and the rear fishtails.

Its also a little rough when accelerating slowly and up shifting.

Whats nice is a manual up shift in wot

And for the pump, the wear marks were at the top of the rotor.

Update on this, i was finally able to get the pinion bolt removed.
I ended up picking up an aircat 1150 impact for a about $130, listed as used on amazon.

I have a 8gallon harbor freight borrowed from my father in law while i save up for that quincy two stage.

The impact is rated at 1100ft lbs in reverse, it zipped that pinion nut off like it was nothing!

Not relevant to the OP's '84 of course BUT if you've a '93+ D44 then it's likely assembled with a crush-sleeve as OE. There may have been a mix in '93 but '94+ should if OE be. D36 as OE never. Nearly all w/after-market are crush-sleeve builds.

You mentioned Typhoon/Syclone sometime back in a thread. Do you still have either?
