"Mystery Part", to me anyway...
Okay, this part has been just kinda hanging there at the front of the engine on a mostly stock '86 for years, and it's not bolted down to anything. Never caused a problem, but recently while replacing my thermostat I encountered similar looking mounting hardware under the water neck, and thought of this again. Where does it mount? Must be under or around the throttle body, I am guessing...and what is it? Thanks!

That's the EGR solenoid valve. This will give you an idea of how it mounts and how the vacuum lines connect:
It mounts on the rear bolt for the thermostat housing.
It mounts on the rear bolt for the thermostat housing.

I think the part you're mentioning is the one I found under the water neck. The one in the pic I put up is a very similar, but a separate piece. The vacuum lines going to it make it too short to mount under the water neck. Sorry if I am mistaken, and thanks for your reply.

Having confessed I didn't even know what it was, I am definitely not challenging anyone :-)
I'll double check tomorrow...Maybe I goofed on the pic I posted, but I can tell you this...both parts have that same mounting bracket.
Thanks for your input.

If the bracket is identical to what Cliff's posted that's what it was/is. There should be a number on the solenoid that can be used to ID what it was/is. Post all of the information you see. If it's just hanging and the bracket is very different I'd think it's possibly the canister purge solenoid, could it reach all the way to the canister? Canister solenoid solenoid if OE would be attached to the canister bracket under a cover. Single bolt attaching.

Don't think it's long enough, but will check...you never know.
Thank you!

If the bracket matches the EGR brkt Cliff posted it's done. If not mention the info. Could maybe someone have just installed the EGR Solenoid and just "hung it" vs the replacement and the correct mounting and orientation? I'm thinking maybe LOL They maybe didn't want to chance the fastener damage that occurs when aged bolts are tampered with. If there's no connector and hoses to the one mounted at the outlet it's what they've done.

Update with part number, and more pics
Okay guys...thanks for the help so far. I made good, and took more pics. I'm going to call the one under the water neck "The Cliff EGR", and the other one "The Mystery EGR".
First Pic:
As you can see in this pic of "The Cliff EGR" the water neck area is to the right, and slightly out of focus. It was mounted there.
Second Pic:
Here is the "Mysetry EGR". There's a part number on it. Looks like "DR 195 9293". See the vacuum lines coming out of it? The water neck is behind this, so even if it would reach, it would be at a very awkward angle, and most certainly kink close.
Third Pic:
Here's what the hoses of the "Mystery EGR" go to, and that's the "Mystery EGR" on top of it:
Fourth Pic:
And here's a pic both together, just so you don't think I've been doing this in the garage with the door closed, and with the car running, LoL. "The Cliff EGR" near the water neck, and "The Mystery EGR" to the bottom right.
I'm starting to think maybe "The Cliff EGR" is in the wrong place, and maybe "The Mystery EGR" goes there...and ""The Cliff EGR" goes somewhere else. Maybe someone goofed, realized it after it was assembled, and let that other one just hang. The car runs okay...who knows? Are there two of these solenoids maybe? Anyone have a routing diagram?
I can see it now...Forever to be known as "The Cliff EGR", LoL...

Looking more and more that something like that is going on. I don't want to deal with it either, but it's been waiting it's turn, and might as well while I have a bunch of other stuff apart. Thanks!

An original EGR solenoid I would have expected to find a 1997138 (DR138) and the 1997195(DR195) that you've got would have been a GMSPO service part for the original. As to the why and what's connected to where I'll leave alone.
Now in '85 the EGR solenoid and the bracket were 2 individual pieces, see if maybe you can't find a DRxxx on the other solenoid DR111 would have been an '85. It wasn't uncommon for someone to just grab a GM solenoid that looked like the whatever and then to use it.
This routing for an '86 is mentioned to be correct by Cliff. See post#6 if the link doesn't go directly to it. Your routing label is maybe still on the radiator mounting panel.

Other than just the location of the solenoid I'd expect the '85 (different location) and the '86 operate the same so someone got creative and used the '85 and routed vacuum lines as needed.

Thanks...Is the same part, or anything that very closely resembles it used anywhere else on the car? Seems I have two parts that look the same, with different part numbers...DR138 and DR195. Guessing just to pull one out and start from scratch. Any way to test these to find the better of the two if that's the case?
Thanks!
Thanks!
