Default Header wrap, EGR tube covering

My car is an 86. The EGR tube covering is a tattered mess, and falling apart, so it's time to replace. I've read on here where some say the replacement EGR covering shield did not work last very long, and that they opted to use header wrap with stainless steel ties instead.

How many of you have done this?...and...I've managed to do what I need to do without removing the EGR tube, so I don't have to deal with that clamp everyone has trouble with...so my question is, can I use header tape without removing the EGR tube? If not, I may go with the replacement EGR shield instead.

Thanks!

Thanks Vikingtrad3r.

I used a performance world high heat sleeve to cover my EGR tube. I think they come in a few different colors, I choose black.

here's a picture of mine:

I got mine from my local Mopac, they had several sizes and lengths on the shelf.

If you don't have a Mopac in your area, Here's a link to what I think is the same stuff I used:

I got a DEI wrap for the egr tube for mine. It's got a Velcro seam on it, just wrap it on and that's it. I did add stainless steel straps to it to insure it never comes off unless desired and it's held very well.

DEI header wrap - 1" titanium - secured both ends with .020 stainless safety wire.

it's been on about 3 years now - no issues.

Thanks...were you able to do this without removing the EGR tube? What year is your car? Seems 86's like mine, have an odd clamp people have a hard time getting off...and getting back on. Have been trying to avoid having to remove it.

I think I saw some of those today. Do you have a part number for what you used? Thanks!

Thanks...were you able to do this without removing the EGR tube? Your car looks to have the newer (than mine) style EGR tube with torx fasteners. Seems 86's like mine, have an odd clamp people have a hard time getting off...and getting back on. Have been trying to avoid having to remove it.

Unfortunately you have to remove the EGR the way I did it. My car is an 88'. on mine its just a matter of undoing 2 bolts that connect the EGR to the intake and 2 bolts that connect it to the exhaust manifold. Takes me less then 5min to remove and reinstall. Didn't realize that the 86' had a different EGR tube with a clamp.

Yea, I would definitely remove it if I had that style EGR pipe. Unfortunately, I have the earlier style, that uses an odd clamp that seems hard to get off, and harder to get back on...so I'm looking into some options. Thanks for the info!

Thanks...one or the other will work out I'm sure. If I have to take it off, I will...but doing a lot to the car right now, and anxious to get it up and running again soon.

If you use the stainless steel straps to hold things, there's an inexpensive tool that will roll the excess strap into a little ball. I got one, shortened the excess off and rolled up the remainder. Keeps you from having sharp edges in there to cut yourself on. I found this one on Ebay for IIRC under $10. Works well but you need to insure the winding stays straight but that's easy to do.

I feel your pain, I too have an '86. What I did with the clamp was to saw the crimp in half and then drill it, so I could run a very small (allen head) bolt/nut through it. It's still a PITA compared to the later flange mount, but it is reusable and easier than the factory crimp.

I think I read your post on it somewhere...and it's a good idea! I've been able to gently maneuver mine out of the way enough so far, so hoping I won't have to mess with it much. If I have to remove it, I'll consider your way for sure! Thanks!

Ha! Search ftw.. Having a problem with smoking from oil soaking into the tattered stock egr wrap. Before I fixed the leak from the vent in the valve cover, it was also getting onto the shied and header, and a small fire was experienced. Fun!

So I've ordered wrap but seeing as someone left it uncovered, what's the risk? Seems like a lot of plastic and rubber in that area that could be damaged from the heat?
