The polarizing film on your display is failing. It will get worse and quickly at that. I'm waiting on a rainy weekend to install the kit i got from Brian to repair mine.
Anyone: What would cause the display to have the 1st digit so bright?

having the exact issue with my 85, and , it's the polarizing film. planning on my fix as soon as I work thru the wife's honey-do list -
OK, next question. Watched the video of the display taken out on Bryan's site. Turned out he needed another person to help and the top of the dash had to come almost out. Are they all like that or can it somehow be snaked out without undoing half the interior?
Myself and a friend removed the digital display. I took out all of the screws that held the dash top and that was enough to raise the top enough to maneuver the display around and get to the two wiring harnesses. Even after all the screws were out, the dash top was pretty well stuck into place but as it turned out, I didn't need to take it off. The harnesses weren't as bad as I thought and a little coaxing took them right off.
Taking the display over to the UPS store so they can wrap it up and send it out to Bryan at Batee.com. Already talked to Bryan so he'll be expecting in a couple days.
Bryan received my cluster and put all new screens on. I also asked him to replace all the bulbs. He just sent me a picture of the finished cluster and the Priority tracking number from USPS. Should be here Friday.
P.S. Should have told him to roll back the odometer. 164555 now.

I was all set to take pictures of the refurnished cluster on my Vette as the Priority Mail tracking said it was due today. HA. I checked with the person who delivers my mail and she had no package. Went home and looked up the tracking and it's stuck in Ocala, a city about 35 miles north of me. It was sent by AIR and our small county on the west side of Florida can't handle those planes so it went to the neighboring county and a small post office in Ocala. I called that PO and no answer. I looked up the PO and lo and behold probably the worst PO in the U.S. 42 reviews with an overall rating of 1.9. They never answer the phone, mail boxes are crushed when delivered, and mail is always delivered late. My luck. Probably will sit at that PO over the weekend and if I'm lucky will see the cluster Monday.
This afternoon is a gathering of Bikes and Cars at the local Harley Davidson dealer. FREE beer so you know they'll have a large turn-out. I'll be taking the Vette but without a dash cluster. I've driven before and it's different not seeing any information in front but I gauge my speed with other cars.
I would take a ride over to Ocala Saturday but I'm with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office and they are having a gun show this weekend and I'm on duty at the entrance from 8 to 12am.
FINALLY got the package from the PO with my cluster. Just spent the last 45 minutes putting it all back together and here it is...... (no jokes about my fake wood dash. I like it and that's all that matters.)
Did it myself. Was hesitant about getting the cluster in and attaching the two computer clips on the right side and thought that if I run into trouble I can always call my mechanic that helped take it apart and it's a tight squeeze getting the connections together but they snapped right in and I let the cluster sit while I turned the key and saw everything light up. What a good feeling that was. Then it was a matter of putting back the two dozen screws. The hardest ones were the 4 that hold the cluster in place. I used a flexable grabber with a claw end to hold the 4 bolt/screws while I snaked them into position. It holds the bolt/screws hard enough to start threading them into the holes and once they start in, pull the claw and use the 9/32 driver to tighten them down.
