Default Fuel Gauge

I have an 88 35th Anniversary model. My fuel gauge reads full all the time. It was reading full when purchased it recently so to check I filled it up, It took about 8 gallons. I have seen many posts about removal and repair of the fuel sending unit but nothing on how to check the wiring at the gauge end. I read test procedure for checking the gauge by grounding the sending unit wire at the tank which should bring the gauge to a zero reading. Mine does not and I cannot seem to find any procedure for testing the wiring to the gauge itself. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Open connection somewhere. Open = full, shorted = empty. Try grounding the sensor wire at the tank. If it goes to empty, it's a bad sender.
