WHAT PROBLEMS SHOULD I LOOK FOR ON A 1991 C4 CONVERTIBLE???
Hello,
I am going to be purchasing a 1991 Convert from a brother in law in the LA area.
He is a freak about keeping cars in top condition and has done everything he can to keep this baby running smooth.
I would like to know if you guys have had problems and what have they been.
I have heard the distributers on this year/model have been know to gather moisture and cause runability problems.
Any thoughts???
Tom

No major problems with that year. That distributor isnt different from others, you cant get any of them really wet.
If i was buying this car, id make sure all the bells and whistles work. AC, radio, take a look at the weatherstripping, make sure she cranks right up when hot or cold, how it handles, etc.

No real problems. The distributor is prone to moisture probs in the 92+ models. I believe the 91 has a remote coil so it is different but not trouble.

the 1991 is the last of the L98 motors...
1992 is the first of the LT1.

3d, I bought a 91 a year ago and I have no regrets. The car was in need of some maintenance as a result of youthful neglect, but, other than that, it has been very reliable. 90,000 miles and really runs smooth. I've done lots of small ticket items to it.....been fun! Would I do it again? You bet! :steering:

Go for it..I have a '91 Vert with almost 140,000 miles on her, and no major problems at all. All I have have did, is one intake gasket. She runs great, and I wouldn't have changed a thing in my purchase! You will LOVE it! :steering:

i have a 91 vert. Apart fom the usual advise you may have to do the following where the airbox connects to the hose leading to the TPI. On this year the hose is prone to pop out leaving you with hot unfiltered air sucking into the engine. A simple fix is to use self tapping screws and screw the hose to the box. A lot of us have done this. In fact i recommend doing it. The hose may otherwise pop off and you may not notice it for days or weeks. As far as verts go, the 91 is the best deal on the market right now. You get the new interior and exterior a bulletproof engine and its just a lot of fun, good luck.

I bought a '90 convertible 2 yrs ago with 47K miles. It has been running for 18 months with no problems but the first 6 months were bad.
Needed torque converter clutch and transmission rebuild
ABS computer
ECM
Heater programmer
Water pump
A/C recharge
Alternator
Sport seat pumps and switches
and of course, the Bose radio was bad - head unit, underdash receiver, 3 speaker amps.
There are lots of things to look forward to!

I have a 91 with 190k miles on the original engine. The L98 is stout!
Two common problems are a leaking intake gasket and you might be due for a new heater core.
Less worrisome is a dirty radiator. The fins plug up with grit and trash, but can be easily cleaned with a hose.

I'm 2 yrs into my 91 vert. Only irratating problem is the exhaust vibrates on the X member, Ugh! but at least when I replaced my exhaust it only rattles a little. 152k runs fine. Valves sounded like a flaminco dancer so I decided to rebuild the whole enchilada while I had the money. It's a sickness I hear! :D You may want to check the door pillar caps for cracks, I caught mine once and now it's two pieces. Have fun!
