Default Odometer on 85

The odometer on my 85 just stopped working. However, the speedometer still works. I suspect the spedometer cable or gear from the trasnmission is the problem. My question is whether the odometer is driven off the cable from the transmission and the speedometer is driven from some other point?

the odo is connected to the speedometer.

how, I don't know... but they are.

there is only one cable. in conventional arraingments, the cable goes to the speedo, then, a mechanical connection goes to the odo.

It is electric, the Vehicle speed sensor sends and electronic sighnal to the dash.

The odometet is connected in the cluster by two wires that plug into a circuit board. So if your speedo works, the problem is in cluster. It could be in the electonics, the connection to the board, the odometer motor or a mechanical faliure (which usually mean some previously tamper with it.)
