Whos / Can you convert ZF6 to T56?

I've heard of people being able to do it but I think they had to custom fabricate a bracket to attach the torque arm to the tail of the T56. I don't know why somebody doesn't make a kit for this. I would think they would be able to sell a few to pay for it. If you already have a ZF I don't know why you would want to do it but for the A4 and 4+3 owners I think there would be some interest. I remember somebody trying to fab up the bracket and he had some problems with it breaking. Oh well, that's how we learn I guess.

Why would you want to?

There ya go. One of the reasons I converted to a TH400/Gear Vendors combo. Maybe you should see about getting some other estimates on the rebuild of the ZF? Good Luck.

It is my understanding that the shifter ends up in the wrong place. I want to say the T56 is shorter than the ZF.

5k for a rebuild or 2.5k for a badass T56
I bought one used for $1800 with 60k miles on it. I had no idea that a rebuild would cost that much. I have heard that GM sells remans and gives you a core credit, even that cant cost five grand, could it? What about http://www.ZFdoc.com have you tried them? It sounds like the ZF is the better tranny to stick with if at all possible.

Re: Whos / Can you convert ZF6 to T56? (silver & red CE)
I wanted to do this also and had a T-56 in the garage ( new for $1800). I looked at irt for about a year and I never could figure out how to make a bracket for the torque arm that I felt was strong enough. All else could be worked out. One local guy made a bracket and put a T-56 in but had problems with it die to the bracket not being solid enough. The T-56 is not as stong as the ZF but strong enough for all but the highly modified engine. The T-56 is not as loud and shifts better and the C-5 does have a modified T-56. It looks like to me there would be a good market for the C-4 application. Matter of fact I pursued this several years ago with Borg-Warner but they said they did not think the market was large enough. It would only take a small change for them to build one with the rear housing made to boly direct to the torque arm as does the ZF and 4+3. It the price was reasonable I would buy one. It does have the shifter on the tranny centerline, but that is no big deal. I'm still waiting for the T-56 application for the C-4 to come along. Sid.

What is wrong with your tranny? I had mine rebuilt not all that long ago by the ZF Doc and it was not that much, I even had 1st, 3rd, and Reverse replaced, along with sliders, and other assorted parts.

Re: Whos / Can you convert ZF6 to T56? (Duntov)
The shifter position and length aren't the same. A note about the torque arm. I helped a friend of mine install a LT1/T56 combo into a '94 RX-7. I know, it's strange but the car is reliable and quite quick now, especially with a 396 LT1. Anyway, the 3rd Gen RX-7's have a torque arm nearly indentical to the C4, just on the opposite side of the tunnel. The kit that we used DID link the rear of the T56 with the differential. (The setup in the '7 is very Vette like, just came out 10 years later. ;) ) Therefore, I am fairly confident that a T56 can be slapped into a C4, with a little custom work. Hope this helps.

(Note: Duntov's rebuilt ZF6 shifts very nicely. I'm a bit covetous)

Here is a T56 conversion in a C4 that I came across last night...

I never said it could not be done, it would just be less cost effective than getting the ZF6 rebuilt. After looking at the abovbe post, it is obvious that ANYTHING can be done for the right amount of money ;).

I think the price on ZF's has come down. I had a friend buy a brand new one on Ebay for $1500.00, and I can by rebuilt ones locally for aroun $1800.00

Vette92, that is a great article. I bet he could sell those brackets for the T-56. It looks like a solid piece. That was the part I never could figure how to fabricate and feel good about it. Sid.

that is one impressive job.

Re: Whos / Can you convert ZF6 to T56? (bogus)
The whole car is a prototype "cost is no object" money pit. I doubt if it's seen 5 hours of actual runtime. I see no opportunity to mass produce Mike's brackets or document the design for reproduction. They are probably already in the garbage. Time for the next project...a modified Calloway 1500 HP C5 Z06 with Indy Aurora power or something.
