I believe the 4L60E started in 94.

Transmission evolution is something like this:
1991 - TH700 renamed 4L60 in 91
1994 - added electronic control to become the 4L60E in 94.

All the same transmission, however.

The 700R4s and the 4L60s have a TV cable, while the 4L60E is electronicaly controlled. :steering:

Isn't the 4L60E totally electronic? That's the best auto G.M. makes isn't it?

No TV cable, the computer runs it.

Whether its the best or not is debatable, id rather have a 4L80.

Sorry, that's the one I was thinking about, the 4L80. It can handle all the HP you can throw at it and servive, at least thats what I've been told by some serious racers. ? ?

Problem I had was it was so expensive ! ! ! !

I've got a 94 with the 4L60E. One day at an open track event I blew it up. Lost third gear totally, 2nd gear slipping bad. I blew about two Qts of tranny fluid out the dip stick tube( I bet that's what smoked the gears)! It was smoking like a mosquito bug spraying truck! I had so much smoke inside the car I could not even see all the black flags waving at me!
Since then I only use Mobil 1 synthetic fluid, I've had extra clutches installed with Kevlar bands, out board Trans cooler and a B&M shift kit. I've been beating it hard with drag racing, autox's & high speed track events for a few years now with no sign of wear. I just change the fluid after a hard day of playing.

I have heard that the 4L60E was introduced during the '93 production run.

OK, so I have three cables going into the ASR. Is the extra one of those the TV cable? If so, then I have the 4L60.

I guess I should have said 4 cables instead of 3.

Thanks a ton for the pics. That proves that we have a 4L60 and not a 4L60E in the '93.   :steering: :auto:

Chris, the 4L60 would have the black ECM and the 4L60E would have the silver PCM with the fins on it. Although I've yet to see a '93 with the 4L60E.

BTW, that's a nice clean engine compartment. Did you take the pictures on the showroom floor?

Well, now I'm really confused. I have a late 93 and the codes in the center console say that it has a 4L60E. But according to your pictures, it is not. What makes it more confusing is that after having a custom chip installed, all my shift points changed (for the better). Wouldn't the transmission have to be electronically controlled for a chip to change the shift points? Excuse me, but I'm kind of an idiot on this subject. Does it say somewhere on the transmission which model it is? Thanks

On the '94 and up models, you don't use a chip. You use a programmer to change the shift points. If you have a TV cable, you have a 700R4 (4L60). The only way to change shift points on this tranny is to purchase an aftermarket governor kit. What is the RPO code on your console?
