port your heads and add a cam w/headers, then upgrade your intake/runners and port your plenum later when you can afford it.

Pete89, you are probably going to need a little more power than this to skin that snake! Good luck!

I am not an L98 expert... So I defer to the experts.

Curveit, Gordon didn't tell me what that ESC module was used on; I was glad it cured my flase knock problems.

Gentlemen, since there have been so many requests for that L98 mods data I've put it onto my site. I'm having a little trouble right now with Geocities Page Builder but the essence is there. I'll update on Wed. after I've finalized my "L98 Mods Results" page.

If you can get away with it and can stand the noise (I like it, some dont) the exhaust is the easiest and cheapest place to get HP from an L98. True duals using 2.5" pipes, H or X pipe placed as far forward as possible, no cats and your choice of mufflers/catback. I used muffler eliminators. This netted me a solid 16rwhp at peak, more in other places and good torque gains at all rpms. Headers would help some too. Shorty headers didnt help much, longtubes would have been better. 1.6RR, afpr, air pump eliminator kit (dyno showed maybe 2-3 hp at most) but it cleans up the engine compartment and drops 20-25 lbs from the car. A good tune, bumped timing, larger runners, home ported plenum, accell or big mouth base etc etc. All these things can add up to alot of HP and Trq. My 1990 six speed had about 250 rwhp and 350 rwtrq and it had most, but not all the above mods.

OK, my "L98 Mods - Results Data" page is updated; please note the Comments are my own and not from the data source.

There are many paths to increase HP and performance of an L98; this data shows one of them. It also shows the potential of the TPI system and roughly what gains to expect from some specific mods.

I hope you find it interesting and a useful guide.

Would you please send me the L-98 info as well? I have a 79 car with a tired L 48, and I also have a "rebuilt" L-98 sitting in the garage on a stand. It has the D port aluminum heads. I have added an isky mega cam, roller rockers with guide plates and some more stuff. I would like to get it together and installed soon, I just need a few little things.... You know. Got a couple extra cm push rods layin around?
Can I use the tpi if I get the brain outta a 86 camaro with the tpi? Would it be worth it? I would otherwise be running a weiand intake with a edlebrock 600. Accel billet dist., headman headers.
