Pull the stock distributor, and fuel injection intake (and send them to me), install intake manifold of your choice, carburetor and a vacuum advance HEI distributor. You will lose your mpg readout on the digital dash and fuel mileage will drop or take the Cross Fire Challenge and make the cross fire run. http://www.crossfire.homeip.net Either way Good Luck and enjoy your car

Why would you want to switch from computer controlled fuel injection to a carb? Thats like pulling an HEI for an old points distributer.

Re: 84 X-fire to Carb Swap (Phobos84)
My MPG isnt that hot to begin with 8-9MPG, carb seem like a better way to go then the X-fire for building up powerwise, my lil 2.8 v6 fiero seems faster then the vette

I have spent a lot of time (and money) moding my 84. I had about 400 hp at the fly without the nitrous. Only problem it crossfire liks a lot of gear kind of like an LT1. You put 3.73s in the rear and put on an X-ram and 2 inch throttle bodies and you will screem. Gearing is why the car feels a little sluggish. As far as your gas milage I think that you have something wrong. I got arround 23 highway with it stock and 18 highway after Edelbrock heads, roller cam, x-ram and 10.1:1 compression. I would do a tune up and see what happenes. How many miles do you have on it? I wanted more torque so I'm swapping out the crossfire for tuned port. But I would never go to a carb.

If you do swap it out, I have a factory GM 4 bbl manifold that is from an 82 F-Body (LG4 motor) that may work for you. Cheap.

Don't swap out the throttle bodies. You won't like it. Find somebody that knows crossfires or knows motorcycles. Alot of crotch rockets run multiple carbs. Synching a crossfire is like synching multiple carbs, takes all the same tools. I was getting 25 mpg on mine with 175,000 miles on it before I pulled it for an LT1. They weren't powerhouses to begin with, emissions and mileage were Chevy's main concern in those days, but it should outrun a Fiero, I would think.
Surely someone here knows somebody in your area that could help you out. Don't give up on the fuel injection yet.... GM hasn't used carburetors on Corvettes in the last 20 years or any vehicle in the last 15 years. You shouldn't have to step back to the stone age to make your car run.
Good luck,
JIM

:iagree:
I just noticed you live in PA. What part? If your close to me I can do your throttle bodies for you. All you need is a feeler gauge. If they are out of wack that is why you are getting low mpg. There are a lot of very inexpensive tricks you can do to a crossfire and they will run very well. Mine would stomp stock tuned ports on the street and would not get beatten that bad by LT1s (no nitrous and mostly stock). Now if you go as extreem as I did you will kill Z06s. I even beat a Viper once. (with a lot of nitrous and heads, cam, x-ram :yesnod: ) Don't give up on fuel injection yet. Your setup will run way better then any carb. If you do swap move up not down.

Re: 84 X-fire to Carb Swap (colin84vette)
As stated by many, above, something is SERIOUSLY wrong, here. Get it running right before you give up on it. That milage is a dead give away to "tuning" problems. I don't think un-messed with TBs could be so far out of sync to eat THAT much gas. Have it scanned. Maybe the O2 fouled and it ran rich, and killed the cat. A sensor or two and a little adjusting ought to make a world of difference. Mine has 150,000 miles, an untouched long block, and runs 13's (at sea level) and gets mid 20's mpg on the road. I have to stop more often for oil, than gas, but it still runs well. Find the problem, good luck, and...

never heard of Willow Grove. What part of PA? East / west? Near Pittsburgh? I'm about an hour and a half north of Pittsburgh.

Re: 84 X-fire to Carb Swap (colin84vette)
Plenty of ways to get that crossfire to improve performance, and still stay SMOG legal......
In todays **** Smog laws, it's just not easy to change to a carb setup....
Also what about hood clearance??????
Just my thoughts....
Keep the Crossfire..just work on it...

Hey Phobos,
What are you gonna do with all your X fire stuff when you upgrade? I've seen you talk about your set up before and I'm interested in some of your stuff if you want to sell. Let me know.....

Re: 84 X-fire to Carb Swap (Killer 84 X)
Already sold it all to Chris Doty over on the Crossfire forum. Sorry.
Yah that would be quite a trip from Philly. Go over to the Crossfir forum. In the tech link they have the directions on how to do it.
