Default L98 crank, forged? other engine spec questions

Does an L98 engine in an '86 come with a forged crank? Also, is the block a 4 bolt main? Are the pistons forged aluminum? This engine has the aluminum heads. Thanks for the help.

Your L98 has Cast everything, and is a 2 bolt main.

No, no, and no.

A little over halfway through the model year the coupes got aluminum heads. Chevrolet didn't start producing the convertible until midyear, the same time that the heads were changed over to aluminum. So all of the 'verts came with aluminum heads.

Ok, so I guess the short block is really nothing special. Is it a one-piece rear main seal?

I've heard different stories as to whether the rear main was changed beginning of the 86 model year, or halfway though, and whether or not it corresponded to the change to alum heads.

If you have a 2-piece, you'll be thankful if you have to change it, its much easier. :yesnod: Of course, with the one piece, it probably wouldn't need to be changed in the first place. :smash:

Yep, it's pretty easy to replace a 2 piece seal. Just pull the pan, oil pump and main cap.

Those are just rumors. All 86 Corvette blocks had a 1 piece rear main seals, if it doesn't it was changed. The 87 up block are more desirable because its a roller block (It is machined for hydraulic roller lifters, with a 86 block you will need retroliftewr like the 85 and earlier blocks)
