Default Best way to tell Dana 36 from Dana 44

What's the best way to distinguish between a Dana 36 and a Dana 44 while the rear is in the car?

And am I correct in assuming that if a rear is from an '89 Vette and it's a 3.07:1 ratio, it must be a Dana 36? The automatics were the only ones that had a 3.07:1 rear end in '89, right? The ZF6's were 3.31 or 3.45s?

yes, assuming it is unmolested.

The Corvettes that came with an AT used the Dana 36 and the Vettes that came with a manual transmission were equiped with Dana 44s.

Then it's back to the body shop to get a new rear! I just want to be sure that it's a Dana 36 before I go over and get this guy in line. It says 89 Vette in handwritten chalk on the rear.

Don't ask why a body shop would be replacing a rear :reddevil :D

Great fiberglass guys, but not so up on year to year differences apparently. I didn't even think about it when he said what year the rear came from.

They put a 96 Collector's Edition Front wheel (17x8.5) on the left rear of my 88 (should have been a ZR1 5spoke Front 17x9.5). They admitted the goofed on that one, wait 'til I break this on them! Maybe I can get a 3.54 Dana 44 out of it for free.

I'm surprised a "wimpy" Dana 36 withstood my nitrous experiments, let alone handling the 355 I ran for a bit.

Here's the best way to tell when it's in the car: The D44 in this pic is on the right..........it has very visible strengthening ribs along the driver side and on top where the C Beam bolts in. Pretty easy to see at a quick glance

The batwing webbing is a "W" on each side for the 36 and the 44 is a "V" like in the pictures above. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Also the D44 has only 5 bolts hold the rear cover on and the D36 has 6.
