Rear Alternator Bracket & Headers. Sick of breaking Alternators!!!
Ok somebody help me out here. The rear alternator bracket that 1987 came with WILL NOT WORK with headers. I would have to custom fab something to make it work. I just snapped another alternator in half (damn torque!) because I have no rear bracket attached. Luckily these things have lifetime warranties and I have a spare one.
I know that the rear bracket changed over the years. Does anyone out there running Hooker 2149 headers have one of the years that the bracket WILL work with? I'm sick of breaking alternators!!

I don't know if it helps but on the big block with headers, I had to be creative with the alt bracket. I used a long stud and nut to hold the header on. Then a spacer on the stud to locate the alt bracket in the stock location with another nut. I made the spacer out of steel sleeving.

The '87 bracket uses the 2nd stud back from the front on the original exhaust manifolds. If you saw the hookers you'd laugh because there is NO way thats going to happen. :) The primary is right up against that bolt with NO space around it.

I just built one when I was running the hedman headers.
I took a piece of steel cut it to fit and bent it. rounded the corners. Maybe your dad can help you out since he did a kick butt job on the headers egr block off plate.
I bolted the bracket to the 3rd header bolt back on the headers, and I put a speacer on that bolt to bring it out like the stock maniolfds had.

You have the same set up as this?
I had to trim down the side of the spacer to get mine to clear.

Nope, my bracket goes 1 bolt hole closer to the front of the car. You have an 85 right? Maybe I should order an 85 bracket and go from there.

We had the same problem when installing headers on the 84 and 89. We custom made a bracket out of 1/4" pipe.
This is the 89 bracket. Pipe cut to length, flatten the ends and drill appropriate holes.

Scorp.
Easy solution I did the other day....as I ripped the housing right off an alternator at the track
I took the bracket, that you typically have there. Straightened out the one end so it had no bend. I ran it right down just past the back of the alternator. You need to use a longer bolt and use nuts for jam nuts to get the proper spacing. So it runs just past the back of the alternator.
The bracket will then go to the first bolt hole in the header for the #1 cylinder. THere you will need to again use threaded rod and a series of jam nuts to get the proper spacing.
It took me about 30 minutes to do it, and the results are a very clean lookin setup. It keeps everything real tight together rather then the other ones that go back the block further.
I was going to make a tech article with pictures to help out others. Just havent got a chance to have Dad take some pictures of it. That reminds me...I need a digi camera
I will see if he can take some quick shots for me to help you out. I think you will see what I did if you look at it. Its really easy.

Scorp...
Just for you, I took a 40 mile drive to my parents to get a shot of the bracket. Well it wasn't just for you...I just needed an excuse for me and my litle buddy Kael to go for a cruise. So we went down there to get some pictures of the bracket I did.
Here they are...You can see from the pictures hopefully how to do it...
Any questions let me know. I will put together a tech tip to explain it better when I get the time...
Later!

That does make a clean installation. I still prefer the forward to rear stability that the angled bracket provides.

believe me that thing is like a rock on there now. I pried around on it with a bar and i moved the engine when I tried to move the alternator

Jesse thanks for the pics! I might introduce my bracket to Mr. Vice tomorrow. :D Not all years are affected!!! The Hookers actually come with a 3rd standoff for mounting the bracket. '87 seems to be one of the bitch years that had the bracket in a wierd location.
