1985 water pump

Re: 1985 water pump (Hall1836)
Not too bad.
Drain radiator.
Take off the belt and tensioner.
Pull the AC compressor bracket. Take all bolts out except the top one, tilt the bracket forward then take out the top bolt. Move the compressor aside and take off the fuel lines. Then remove the bracket.
Pull the alternator then air pump bracket.
There is some air pump plumbing in there also.
Should be down to the pump by now. 4 bolts hold it in. Unbolt and remove.
Reverse to install
Not sure of the time since I have not done just the water pump, but first time I would think it would take about 3 hours.
BTW; if you have more than 100k on the engine go ahead and change the timing chain since you are this close. Adds a couple of hours, but saves a complete rebuild

:iagree: What he said
There's one bolt thats a pain in the butt... located just below the a/c compressor clutch pulley... it's notched and will be the last one to come out. You need an open end wrench or a torx bit to unscrew it.
Timing chain will take several hours longer..
pull harmonic balancer, remove starter, drop pan, pull cover.
You could always wait on that though... you'd have to pull the water pump again, but it'll take half as long the second time around, I guarantee it.
Also, I bet your 85 has nylon teeth on the cam gear (READ: plastic in your timing set is NOT GOOD) replace it with a one piece steel gear if you end up doing it.
Timing chains are hit and miss. Some will go for 200,000 miles, some will fail at 50,000. But when they do, you can be assured you'll have extensive engine damage.
