Default Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement Attempt

Never could get past the 36 mm spindle nut. Started off with an old Easco 1/2" ratchet and cracked the case. Borrowed a 1/2" breaker bar - broke. Broke a 3" extension in the process. Borrowed a Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet - broke. Went to Sears traded in the ratchet and bought a new Craftsman breaker bar. Also picked up some more penetrant lubricant. Went back home worked with the breaker bar for a while and bent it into a banana. Very soon it was broken in half. Put the new Craftsman ratchet on there and broke it. Took the good parts off of each breaker bar and made another one and broke it. All of this was done with a 9' breaker bar. We tried heating it up to an extent during this process but did not have a good torch or anything. The only thing that did not break was the Thorsen socket I bought from Autozone. I think I need to go back and try a Thorsen ratchet.

Will be taking it to a machine shop this afternoon to allow them to put an impact wrench and heat on there to see if they can break it loose. Wish me luck. :yesnod:

Best of luck. That don't sound like fun. I hope mine don't go soon.

Yep, I broke mine loose with an impact gun. I didn't even try to break my tools...went for the gun right off. :D

Comes off like a knife through butter with that sucker didn't it? :) I only have 3/8" and 1/2" torque wrenches so I had to use an adapter that changes my 1/2" wrench to a 3/4" and it torqued great.

I hate to tell you but you have been hit with the same $%^&* that I had happen to me a few years ago. Your spindle nut is WELDED to the axle threads. Its your worst nightmare. I've been there. You have to get a dremel
tool and grind through the nut so you can split it. You will ruin the axle in the process. Depending on how badly the nut was welded you may be able to get the nut off after you've split or you may need a narrow chisel to break it free
where it is welded. Sorry to be the one break the bad news. Be careful looking for a replacement rear axle, every year is different! Good luck. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

This is not what I wanted to hear, but is what I was expecting. I haven't got it to the machine shop yet, but I do hope they can do something with it before I have to break the nut off. Where to look for the best prices for an axle if necessary?

Binderdundat !!! Axle nut--- 3/4" impact didn't touch it.
Used 3/4" breaker bar and 6 feet of pipe.

Torx bolts----1/2" impact didn't touch it.
Used 1/2" ratchet and 1 foot piece of pipe.

Don't give up, just get bigger tools!!

Good Luck !!

suddenly feel lucky, I'm half way through a rear bearing swap....and with the help of Scorp508 and WD-40, removing a stuck rotor has been my biggest problem so far. Definitely remove the half shaft to access the T-55 bolts. Mine were tight, but came off without a real fight. The 36mm came off with a breaker bar and a cheater pipe. Some pics.....

Just for info,I always use a 24 inch or larger breaker bar to get tight bolts loose. It has never failed and if a bolt was seized,it would snap off the stud it was on by using the long bar.
12 inch or less breaker bars cant give you the leverage ya need, even with a pipe on it.A 2 foot or longer bar gives great leverage.Stay away from the 12 inch or shorter ones.It just wont do it.
Even autozone sells 20 inch and longer 1/2 inch drive breaker bars pretty cheap that does the job well.Leverage is usually the key if theres no impact gun to use with 400+ foot lbs in reverse.

I didn't use any tools on mine. After I removed the cotter pin and retainer, I just unscrewed the nut by hand. :skep: Knew something was wrong at that point  . Then the bearing/hub assembly came out in two pieces...

After busting the first tool you should have gone for the impact gun, or 3/4" drive. That's what I use. Good thing your tools have a lifetime warranty!!!
