Affordable scan tool for a 95 LT1?
I changed out the opti cap & rotor, fun job, and went to start it up, no fire.
Checked all the obvious, no lose wires.
I have a "check engine light"
So a went out and bought a scanner for it. $149
I told him this was the "transition year" OBDI with a OBDII computer.
He said I could take it back if it didn't work out.
Well, it obviously didn't or I wouldn't be typing this now.
It powers up, but the pins don't match up.
I called the 800 number for the scanner's tech support.
They said I need a different one with a special connector and software. $280!!
If I had a laptop, I just order a copy of LT1edit, the FREE version won't read the codes.
I suppose I could make up a 50 foot cable

Actually in '95 the ECM logic is still OBDI but the ALDL socket is the 16 pin OBDII style.
Do you have a laptop PC? If so, might be better to download the free realtime scanner from LT1EDIT at
http://carputing.tripod.com/9495LT1Edit.htm
"pcmcomm.exe" is the filename

Oldman:
I found the GM OBD I scanner (a la EZ Link from AutoXray) here for about $20 less (with shipping included).
http://www.autocheckup.com/
For $144 shipped to your door. Mine's currently en route, but the service seems good so far.
** However, the newer plug isn't included- so that will be extra like the other site.

Thanks.
I left them a message.
Mid-America lists the same tool, but no adapter, and they list a 95 as an OBDII car. WRONG. They're tech guys are suppose to call me tomorrow.
But I thing I'll go with yours.
The car is back together, the coolant is full, still no spark. :cry

If the 95 is OBD I then the code you are probably trying to read is 16. No low resolution pulse. The car will run with the high pulse missing but not the low one. Have you trouble shot the opti at the access connectionon the manifold? I'm shooten from the hip here as mine is a 92. But the opti's work the same.

You can jump out the conector and read the codes scrolling through the DIC with the buttons on the right side of the dash. But for a reader I have a Auto-X ray and it works great for all GM now up to 03. Do a search about jumping it out because I haven't had my 95 for 3 years and forget how I did it.

None of the manuals I have show how to do either of those.
I know on OBDI cars you can get the codes to blink.
Neither explain how to do it on a 95, as a matter of fact they say you can't do it. I you know how I'd love to know.
How are you trouble shooting the opti, with a meter? any special hookup tools.

My AutoXray came today
Great tool, $100 cheaper than what I've been looking at.
It showed no codes, stored or otherwise.
I cycled through all the sensors, everything seemed on the ball.
Tore it all down, a lot faster after you've done it once.
Sure enough to rotor was off!
So much for "it only goes on one way"
BTW it fired up w/o the MAF, airtemp sensor, water temp sensor, the waterpump or coolant. I only ran it for 10 seconds.
So much for my "low coolant light"
It's all bolted back up.
I'll wire up the eletric waterpump tomorrow.
Thanks guys!
