NO! I have a buddy who tried to use an MSD6AL in a marine application. He went through three of them before learning his lesson.

I had my MSD for two years, and after many engine washes and tons of water splashing on it for whatever reasons it is still working like new. Supposedly the MSD boxes are moisture proof and if for some reason water does get in the box all the electrical components are coated with a water resistant type of grease.

Hmmm, now that you mention it, maybe it was the pounding of the hull on the waves and subsequent vibration that killed his units. It was on an off-shore race boat used for competetion.

The circuit board is sealed w/ a water proof type clear coat (not grease). Where the outside wires solder into the board,... they are not waterproof.

Will the unit survive undewater,.. hell no. Can the outside get splashed repeatidly,... yes (within reason).

The location in the pic should be fine.

Thats where most people mount their MSD. It can take some water.

Just dont leave the hose pipe or pressure washer on it, i wouldnt drop it in a bucket of water ya know.

Default can a msd box get wet?

I had my msd 6al installed in December '02.

I've lost track how many times I've washed (SOAKED) the engine since then. I'm pretty heavy with the simple green and the hose. So far, so good :D

I have an Accell 300+ that was given to me after the owner washed down his engine.
Accell's ad says it is water proof, but I found dead spiders and water inside. Even though the circuit board was coated, the defective components I replaced were all destroyed by water.

It works now, I only had it on my vehicle for a couple of days. I don't like it.
I used a conformal Military Spec coating on the board and sealed the case well. But, I don't need it or like it.

Just seal the seems with some clear silicone sealant, and around the wire connections. Should keep all moister out.

There's a differance between moisture proof and water proof one will take a light splash water and the other submurged in water, but with the expantion and contraction of differrant materials the msd unit will never stay water proof.

Don't seal the edges with silicone! Atleast that's what MSD says not to do. The box does need to breath alittle otherwise condensation can build up and get trapped inside the box.
