Default LT1 lifter tap-tap sound @ 4.5qts, quiet @ 5.0qts, why?

Changed oil today. I had been running 5qts (Mobil 1 5W-30). I thought I would religiously obey the owner manual Fluids and Capacities page and put in only 4.5 quarts. So I put in the 4.5 qts, verified on dipstick (midway between top and bottom operating zone boundarys), and went for a drive. Upon pulling in garage when done there was a lifter tapping very noticeably. It was a mild drive, no frisky stuff. Went ahead and put in the remaining 1/2 quart and it stopped the tapping.

Does this mean I am in need of an adjustment in the valve train? I would think that it should pump up the lifter(s) okay at the factory 4.5 quarts and not need the extra 1/2 quart.

Does the owner’s manual account for the one quart for the filter? I don't think it does. You where probably down 1/2-1 quart depending on the capacity of the filter you used. If the noise went away when you added oil then you don't need to mess with your valve train.

Good luck

The 4.5 quart thing came from an undersized oil filter originally. All the specs reflect the new filter type which should now handle the 5 quart capacity. Gordon killebrew says that 4.5 quarts is the correct fill rate, I say go with until it hits the top of the dipstick.........valve trains are expensive as you already know.....do what the rest of the planet does and make sure its full to the top of the dipstick.

  As per your reply and the others, I will not worry about it, run with the traditional small block chevy 5 quarts and forget about it :yesnod:

I went with an AC Delco PF52 this time, no K&N's on the shelf this time and it was between Fram (no way...), Purolator, AC, and Proline...
