Default L98 owners: Can I remove my A.I.R. diverter valves/solenoids without getting any codes?

I'm speaking of the two vacuum solenoids between the A/C compressor and intake duct. I can just remove the vacuum line and run a rubber line directly from the plenum to the AFPR.

My plan is to gut the AIR pump, and cap the catalytic converter's air tube with a 600* rubber cap and clamp. (Will that hold up?) I can't find any better things to cap it with. I also want to remove the air tube, remove all check valves and smog pump metal tubes, cap the air injection lines on the stock headers, gut the smog pump vanes and fabricate a block off plate for the smog pump output.

I can't believe there's no kit for all this! I bet they're demand for one. I think I have a bad check valve, and rather than buy a new one for $15, I'd rather pull the entire smog system off the vette. And maybe weld up a test pipe to **** off the hippies.

Will this give me codes?

On my '89, I just unplugged the 2 connectors to the air diverter box without any problems.

No you will not get any codes , just plug any vacum pipes and cover the connectors with tape so it`don`t built any moisture and just tuck them in a safe place , here are some before and after pics from when I removed mine !!

Good luck . :steering:

Cool, thanks!

I ordered some stainless steel caps for the AIR injection lines.

$2 each. I'll put up pics when I'm done.

Wait a minute, what's this talk about vacumn lines? There are no vacumn lines associated with the smog pump crap system. Leave your afpr like it is. There should be no change in vacumn routing unless you're pulling your egr as well. I pulled all of that garbage off of my car and it is much easier to work on (no smog checks here). Those 2 solenoids are electrical, not vacumn. Just unplug the 2 connectors, tape them back, and remove the rest of the junk, garbage, and crap  . I wouldn't use a rubber cap on that cat, it will just burn off. When I removed my air tube to the cat, I just pinched the tube on the cat closed. It seems to leak very little if at all- I can't hear it or feel it and it's been that way for a year. Put 1/2 plumbing caps on where the check valves were on the manifolds until you remove the manifold plumbing.

Just trying to clear some things up. im in the middle of take out my egr crap. and I also have a few questions. first i have headmen headers with no smog tubes on them. I have a homemade pully bracket. that I must say is very nice. i have not yet taken off the egr valve under the plemun cause i havent made a cover plate yet. I believe the only vac line ill have left is to my pressure regulator. and thottle body. can some one tell me if this is correct?

Lemme think about this.

Vacuum to EGR, BOTH smog diverter valves, throttle body, cruise control, fuel vapor canister purge system, fuel pressure regulator, and EGR solenoid.

(on my 85)

Should also have one other line off one of the rear ports through a one way valve by dist that goes through firewall to heater controls and to the vacumn ball on the LH front wheelwell.

On early L-98`s there is a vacum line connected to the diverter valve , I said on early L-98`s because my friend`s 85 had a vacum line and my 88 didn`t .

There is a vacuum line that attaches to both the air diverter and switching valve. Originally was hard plastic line that T's between the two (tucked down behind passenger side fuel rail). The solenoids are the electrical on/off switch for this vacuum, which then controls the flow of air (same way as vapor canister solenoid).

Alrighty. As soon as my shipment comes in, that stuff is gone.

I think that vacuum line going around back is the one that serves the CC, and all vapor purge stuff, and the vacuum ball.

the large metal line in the port on the back of the plenum serves the HVAC controls.
