Primary Cooling fan not working - advice needed
My 94 coupe does not have the primary cooling fan start up before the secondary starts running. I cannot turn on the AC to see if that starts the fan because the a/c is currently disconnected (changed compressor and still need to have it recharged).
How do I test the primary cooling fan and what is most likely causing it to not run?

You can ground the grn/wh wire (thats the wire on my 87, may not be that color for a 94) on the fan relay which closes the relay and the fan should run. Unplug the fan and jump 12v to the fan motor. If it doesn't run then the brushes are worn out in the fan motor and it needs replacing. If the relay closes and 12v is on the plug to the motor, check with an ohmeter the ground on the plug, it should be less than 0.1 ohms. If no 12v on the plug with the relay closed, then either the relay contacts are worn out or you have a blown fusible link that supplies power to the fan relay. Check the relay by swapping the two fan relays.

I thought on the 94 you had a low and high speed and both fans ran at the same time always. If this is the case are you saying that fans dont kick on till they reach high and only the right side fan is turning on?
If that is the case then check the #1 cooling fan relay or the #3 relay (most likly the #1) A quick way to check is to pull the number 3 relay and install it in the number one position if both fans run on low and stop on Hi then the #1 relay was bad. I just wired my fans in a 94 configuration (at least I thought I did) and the fans run in series for low speed and paralell for high speed so if the #1 relay is bad then you should only have high speed on fan #2. Hope this helps

Thanks jfb! I am going to try swapping the relays then jump the connections, maybe it will be an easy fix, I doubt it....

The secondary fan (right side) comes on at some point over 230 deg, nothing happens prior to that and the Primary fan does not run either at the lower temp as it should.

If it turns out I need a new motor I think I will turn to the lifetime warranty fan motor at Shucks.

I swaped the relays and the secondary fan is still the only fan to come on.
Hope you guys don't mind a few simple questions:
How do I ground the relay to check for fan operation?
How do you ground the ALDL on the 94 to get the fans to come on?
What are all the fuses I should be checking for the cooling fan system?
Thanks!

Apply ground to dark green and white wire at relay.Terminal "F" Not positive of the color on your year
Jump A and B at ALCL
Cooling fan fuse(powers coils in relays) Fusible link near battery(powers fan motors)
