Default Help! Gears lost...

Buddy of mine has a -88 automatic corvette that has problems with gears. Sometimes it losts 1st gear and reverse. If you shut it down and start it again it finds all gears and is fine again... until it will lose those gears again?! WHat could cause these problems.
Oil have been changed at correct intervals and filter too. Oil level is correct. Could this mean that he has to take off the transmission and get it rebuild?
Hmm, might be a good idea to install TransGo shift kit too ;)

you don't mention the mileage or the driving style....

but if he has been hard on it, and it has a lot of miles, rebuilt it, by all means.

I donno about the TransGo. I know what it is, but that's about it.

Mileage is 220k miles so it might be a time for rebuild. He's driving like any other corvette driver, cruising and sometimes accelerating with me on the line :)

It's probably due for a rebuild. If I remember correctly, there is one clutch pack used for 1st and reverse and this is the one that gets the most abuse. Most likely it is wearing out so a shift kit isn't going to help you any.
