How to change the gear ratio on my 86 Vette ????
I am pretty sure my 86 Vette has stock gears. I want to upgrade them to get more acceleration, and a better ET. What is involved in changing them, and what would be the best gear ratio to use? What about brands of gears??

If you have 3.07 now, then you dont need any more gear unless you plan on putting a Miniram on it.
Going to 3.54/3.45 would make you faster to 60, but likely slower to the 1/4mi.
If you have a manual, you have 3.07s now. If you have an automatic with the G44 RPO code, you have 3.07. Otherwise you probably have 2.59. If keeping the D36 carrier, you would probably only need to change ring&pinion. This is not something for a newbie to do, get someone who's done it before.

I have automatic. I have done alot on cars, to include engine and transmission jobs, but am new to GM, and am in the process of learning things that are different from Ford, which I am very familiar with. Thanks!

Glad to see you upgraded from the "blue oval" to the "BowTie" The Helms Service Manual has a very complete "checklist" for ring and pinion change. The most detailed and important steps are in the setting of the pinion and ring. One note you should follow is don't put a used ring and pinion into a different case. They will (most of the time) whine. There is lots of information on this subject in the archives. :chevy
