Is this a trick question ?...I get my oil changed at Walmart and they use Mobil 1 right out of the quart bottles...I do bring my own K&N gold filter though...

Walmart has a house brand of dino oil, but I've never seen any synthetic. Why do you ask? Are you trying to save $0.88 on your next oil change or something? :D

Walmart has a house brand of dino oil, but I've never seen any synthetic.
I was at Walmart this past weekend to pickup a couple of 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1. Right next to the Mobil 1 display was a display of Walmart fully Synthetic.

I was reaching for the Walmart before I realized what it was. The color of the jugs were almost identical to Mobil 1. I wondered at the time if Walmart had made a deal with Mobil 1.

If I was Walmart I would cut a deal with someone cheaper and make my oil LOOK like Mobil 1 :yesnod:

If it is a rebadged good synthetic, I'd definitely be buying it at $2 a quart. So far, I've read it's made by Quaker State, but the Warren name has also come up. Some have said it's not a true synthetic, but highly refined mineral base. I'll keep looking for more info.

Probably from the remains of the Wal-Mart employees after they finish squeezing the life out of them.

I run Mobil-1 in my 87 as well as my 92 so I just buy Mobil-1 in case lots. That way I don't have to worry about different brands. While your 87 doesn't really require synthetic oil, it's not a bad idea to use it. There are some very good synthetic oils on the market if you don't want to pay the premium price for Mobil-1. I get my Mobil-1 at Costco $23.99 for a case of 6.

I hear the Wal-Mart MSDS lists Warren as the distributor. Warren says they formulate it. It is not completely synthetic in the sense that it exclusively uses PAO, but Mobil 1 does not anymore either. Again, I'm just reguritating what my searches are turning up.

I asked this question a few weeks ago in OT... I never got a positive answer though, it seemed there were a couple of possibilities... I think Quaker State and Penzoil were the possibilities...

I don't plan to use it in the Vette, but my daily driver might appreciate it... I currently run Mobil 1 in my DD, but the Northstar takes 7qts to fill, then burns a few quarts between changes... It's like doing 2 changes on the Vette... It gets pretty expensive that way...

For $12/5qt jug, I can buy 2 jugs, change the oil, and have the 3 remaining quarts for top off between changes... And I can do it all for under $30 that way...

I did compare them in the store and both Mobil 1 and the Walmart brand have the same rating in the Starburst symbol...

Isn't walmar/ sams brands usually a failed attempt from another maker? I'd stay away!

Its funny that this post is here, I just bought htis stuff at WalMart today! I got a 5 qt jug for the aforementioned price of $11.88. It may not be the best quality synthetic, but it must be more refined than most dino oils. The price was too good to pass up. I used to put all Mobil 1 in my cars, but its just too much money. My Nova takes 8qts, Impala 5qts, 67Nova 6qts, and then the vette. Oil Changes $HURT$. I cut back a while ago on the Nova to 6qts dino/2qts synth Mobil1. I liked that better than partial synthetics- at least I know the ratio. Im gonna try the Walmart suff in the Impala first.

Who makes it?

Same as all the other Wal-Mart house brands...

Whoever bids the lowest on that particular lot.

 Probably a family in China working out of their kitchen. Most everything in Walmart comes from China.

Wake my 95 Northstar holds 8.5 quarts with filter change.
I know a guy who bought mobil one from walmart & the containers 2 of them had been opened & used oil put in it.
Probably a walmart Mechanic doing his own car for free.

I saw a house brand synthetic at AutoZone, and also wondered about the quality. The quality is probably fine. But I'd like to sit back and allow someone else to be the guinea pig.

Even Mobil 1, over the years, had a hiccup or two.

You may want to doublecheck that, factory spec should be 7.5qts... I know if I add any more than 7qts, it burns through the excess pretty quickly... 7 is the right amount for me where it keeps the low oil level warning away, and it minimizes consumption... From what I'm told, excess oil won't hurt, but it will burn through it pretty quickly if you see lots of high RPM operation... Check out the Caddy Forum over at caddyinfo.com for lots of good info...

Thanks for the warning on the used oil, I'm shocked that people would go through all that for $12 worth of oil...
