Default Is the 700R4 in corvettes different then the one in other other GMs

I heard a long time ago that the one in the Corvettes is about 3/4 of an inch shorter then the one in the F-bodies and other GM vehicles. Does anyone know for certain wether this is true or false?

I'm not sure about the exact length difference, but yes, the Vette 700R4 has a short tail than other GM 700s. Also, with the exception of early '84s, Vette 700s have a 30 spline input shaft.

:iagree:
In addition the Vette 3-4 up-shift sleeve allows WOT shifts into OD; there may be other internal differences that I'm not aware of.

That is true, but nothing really to worry about. I just swapped a 700 from an 85 full size 2WD chevy pickup into the vette. The difference in output shaft length wasn't enough to cause concern.

Swapping tail shafts is rediculously easy. If you have to remove the speedo gear (not the sender part) on the output shaft be very careful as it is easy to break.

I thought vette's DIDN'T shift into OD at WOT, while the Camaro's DID. In any case, is it easy to put the 3-4 up-shift sleeve in, so that it will shift into OD at WOT?

Yes the tail housing is shorter and the front of the transmission is a tad bit smaller. That according to my transmission guy

If you are building one from scratch then you can add in any shift kit / servo /valving to suit your needs so you may as well start with the cheapest core. If you say "Vette" the prices goes up.
I disagree I think you start with a Vette Core unless it is alot more expensive. You will want the corvette servo, the valve body, spring, and governor or otherwise you will want to adapt all those parts on the core that god knows what its performance (or lack of) characteristics are.

Tailshaft ext and output shaft are approx 1 inch shorter. As others have stated I have put a regular 700R4 in mine and even with the longer shaft still had over 1 inch freeplay on the yoke at the trans.

Only if you are building from scratch though. The early (pre-87) 700R4's aren't as good as the latter models in many ways. Oil pumps are better the newer the tranny is, valve body is different as well. Get at least a 89-90 model to start with.
