You will need cam, retrofit lifters propper lenght pushrods and a cam button to minimize end play of cam. Check with cam grinder for propper dist gear

does the block have to machined in order for it to work?
Lingenfelter sells a retrofit kit so that no machining is required.

No machining nessary. You may want to invest in a quality timing cover. The cam button uses the cover to keep pressure on the cam . A rigid cover is a must.

It's a good idea to get a timing chain set that has the three piece Torrington bearing which fits between the camshaft gear and the block. Some cams are front walkers while others are back walkers; depends on how the lifter bores were drilled at the factory.
Remember, roller cams were being used in Chevy engines, both Big and Small block, long before GM started installing them at the factory.
