Default Acetone ok to use on windshield?

I have some water marks that aren't coming off with Windex, I have a bottle of acetone, would it hurt anything?

I use a slow stream of water and 0000 steel wool. Won't hurt the glass and will remove any water marks.

A couple of old tricks to get grease and oil off your windshield is a pouch of Bull Durham tobacco (not the chew) and hot water. Another is a can of Coke and some balled-up newspaper. Rinse completely after either one.

Don't know if acetone will work or not, just be careful not to get it on anything but the glass. That stuff could eat up your seals, paint or most anything else!

I use Stoners' Invisible Glass cleaner, with newspaper, and it works very well.

Claybar's another option that works well on glass! ;)

Be really careful about mixing chemicals-even on glass, I did on my house window and it started to like smoke

I have found over the years bon-aimi is the best. wet the windshield and use a cotton rag/cloth. put a little on the windshiled and rub in like you were waxing the car. best thing is bon-aimi is it cost $0.59. It's a very fine powder that will not scratch. I use it on all my windows.

P.s I'm not sure if I am spelling it right? I know the bon is right but not sure about the aimi part. IT's a in the area with ajax, and house hold cleaners, gold, and red label.

Don't  but hot water and newspaper works good for water stains. Don't know why but it does. And then just seal it up with some RAIN-X

I had some water marks that did not come off with all the cleaners, rain-ex, etc. I finally cleaned the marks off in a few minutes with a Brillo pad and very gentle rubbing.

Acetone will work, but don't let it get on your wipers. Also you can use a claybar and some carwash. :yesnod:

Years ago I used 409 on my windshield and it left a film that I had to use a razor blade to get off. Since then 409 has changed I believe. At that time the dang bottle on back said don't use on glass. It pays to read directions first. I wouldn't even try acetone. I would be afraid it would get into glass pores and really cause a problem.

You would think that if the water marks are from hard water left to dry, it is probably the dissolved salts (from the water being hard) that you see. I like the idea of the claybar and some soapy solution to act as a lube. You could always try some vinegar on the dried glass with a piece of cloth and see if that helps. Glass is pretty insoluble to just about everything (but not Hydrofluoric acid which etches and dissolves glass!). The claybar is the safe bet, followed by the vinegar . Then you could flood the windshield with water to completely dilute the vinegar so none of it gets on painted surfaces, making sure the windshield is dry.

The problem with alot of solvents that people normally have access to is they are not really that pure, and can leave a film from the impurities in the solvent. Most of the stuff people have access to from hardware stores is pretty dirty stuff from an optical point of view.

I've seen glass polishes that have been used, even something like Meguiars fine cut cleaner could work well in removing spots, followed by a decent glass cleaner.

Good luck!

I use Bon Ami also to get road film off the glass. It is calcium carbonate, a mineral which does not scratch. Don't use Comet, Adjax or other kitchen cleanser as they will scratch glass. Look at he contents before trying.

Fine steel wool also is very good at getting paint overspry or other such things off. It may work well for the water marks. Brillo pads are too coarse and have soap chemicals that you don't want on your paint.

Don't use a Scotch Bright (those green pad scrubber sponges) as this will definitely scratch glass.

3m and other paint buffing compounds work, too.

Vinegar may desolve the water marks. Never tried it but it is suppose to desolve mineral deposits. CLR also does that.
