Default will full size tire/wheel , when inflated, fit into the spare tire carrier

I know the 11" x17' will not but I would assume the 9 1/2" x 17" with 275x40x17 will fit. Am I right?

Yes it will. There is a extra slot in the hinge end of the tire carrier that allows it to hang down lower to hold the bigger tire.

I'm skeptical that a wheel/tire that is some 6" wider than the space-saver will fit.
I'll try it tonight after work....

Yes, your user manual shows you how to do it. The ZR1 and Grandsport coupe 315 tires will not fit. The ZR1 actually came with a tire bag to put a 315 into the hatch and straps to hold it down if one went flat. Not sure if the GS did anything like that or not.

Cant you adjust the hangers so that the carrier will hang down lower and allow more room?

Well you dont think that the general would have given us a spare and then expected us to roll the flat over the hill do you.

Yes, but not enough for a 315.

Yeah the 275\40\17 and 285\40\17 will fit, but I think it hangs down too much to keep a full-size spare in there all the time.

Do you plan on carrying a full size spare along with you all the time...or do you just need to know you can carry your flat tire somewhere else besides the cargo area?

With the looong distances here in Arizona I am not comfortable with the limited use donut spare. I have an extra wheel with 275 tire and want to carry it. I was thinking of just putting it in the hatch area but that would not leave much room for the spare fan belt.
Also most ofhighways here are 75mph- I thought the donut was limited to 55mph?

Well, you can give it a try. I know the tire carrier hangs down lower than with the temporary spare. I didn't care for the look, but I can't remember just how low the thing did go. I wouldn't think you would have any clearance issues, but you'd have to check to make sure.

It's pretty simple to lower the spare. If you are going to do this, you might want to take the rear license plate off to make sure that the carrier bolt is properly seated if you can't tell from below.

The owner's manual tells you how to lower the spare tire carrier too.(It might not mention the license plate trick though.)

At least our temporary spare is a 17" wheel!

Just exactly how often do you get a flat tire? I wouldn't think once in a blue moon is worth it to haul around that big tire. Besides that little donut tire will do better than the run flats they put on the c5's.

The donut is meant to get you off of the road and to a service location, not to substitute for daily driving.

But since I have the spare tire pulled on my '89 and my brothers '88, do I have an acceptable set of skinnies for when I go to the track??

The GS has straps but no bag.
