What temp do LT1 fans come on at?
One more question on these cooling fans...
Can anyone tell me at what temperature the factory thermostats are supposed to bring the cooling fans on/off ??? This is on a '96 LT1.
thanks;

On my '93, they come on at 220 and I think they turn off at 213. The Hypertech Power Programmer will make them turn on sooner, and works with the Hypertech 160 degree thermostat. I had that set up on my '96 LT4, and it never got over 189.

I used Tunercat to reprogram my PCM. But, unfortunately for you, Tunercat won't work on the 96 OBDII PCM's. You will have to use LT1 Edit or Hypertech to rest your fans settings.

96 is different. there is NO primary / secondary. both fans come on together either in Low speed, or in High speed. the factory ON temps are really high, like 230F or something up there. I have the page circled in my manuals. you'd think the motor would melt down at those temps, but it's not really a problem.
the high speed setting is almost 240. you can hear the fans roaring when there in high speed, which is un-common.

This is correct. Based on some videos that I've seen and what's in the shop manual, the LT-1 has a reverse flow cooling system, and the GM engineers designed the motor to run right up to the edge of overheating. I remember they cited emissions reasons and better engine efficiency. I used to panic when I saw the temp gauge head upwards on a hot day, but now I understand better how the engine is supposed to work. That said, I don't think it's a bad idea at all to have your engine run cooler.
I am a huge fan of running the lt1 cooler.
been doing it for 15 yrs
also w/ 15 psi of boost, with 75 shots of nitrous on the stock bottom end says its great to run cooler
172-174 coolamr temp is wht i see

Agreed. I was really just talking about a stock engine. With mods of course you'll want to keep the heat down (and again, nothing wrong with keeping lower temps in a stock vehicle as long as it doesn't compromise how the engine is supposed to perform).
