phrogs thanks for that awesome write up.

Old post but someone else might find it use full also.

Can anyone tell me where the shims go. I didn't see it in the write up and am not quite that far in removing mine.

In the process of switching out the the shifter in my Vette too, but my buddy and I are having trouble getting the shifter back into its box. For some reason the rod keeping the shifter with the plate seems longer and it's extremely difficult to fit back into the box. There's talk of shims and and we're not entirely sure where we were supposed to put them back. If someone could shed some light that would be awesome.

I'll post a picture tomorrow to better illustrate my issue.

Finally getting to this. Dam the photos are gone. Can someone repost just the main ones?

If I remember I just need to cut the zip tie on the lower part only?

If I remember the pictures correctly their was a clip to pull off? I have a 95 and all I see is a pin. Either I didn't get the boot pulled back far enough or its a pin at the very front.

I guess it would be almost impossible to get the top zip tie on if I cut it? Shure would make it easier right now.

I have a picture of the hurst and my oem shifter side by side. The pin is out on my oem shifter in the photo it might help get an idea. the clip is a wire ring that basically sits on the groove. Keeps the pin from falling out due to vibration.

The pic helps a lot. I assume you don't have to pull back the boot a lot. Mine only went back about 1" but I'm pretty sure that's the pin I was looking at.

I didn't realize this thread was in the ZR1 section, but I assume the transmissions are the same as std Vette?

glad it was of some help. yes as far as I can remember you didn't have to pull it back much. Yes trans should be the same for the shifter install.

Does it matter what gear I'm in? Seems like if it was in 2nd would be easier to get to.

I'm honestly thinking about cutting a small hole in the back of the boot and just pulling that pin out. Should be able to patch it with a inner tube patch.

Probably a dumb ideal just seems a lot easier.

The pin only goes in one way. That's up and out so it needs to be tapped or punched upwards after the little clip is out of the way. Once the pin is out the linkage will come apart.

Thanks, I know what I need to do. I guess I'm looking for a easy way. Just don't want to have to drop tranny incase all goes wrong.

After you get it all done I think you'll look back and agree it's not all that difficult. I highly doubt you would need to drop the trans. Do you have the exhaust removed ? I removed mine and it made it super easy. Some guys punch the pin through the exhaust pipes with a long punch. It can be done but for first timers it may become more difficult than necessary quite fast

5abvit last 2 questions to bother you with.

I guess I need to unbolt the box this sits in. I can't get part in picture pulled out.

The pin probably needs to be started when I reinstall. Don't really see how I can start it after the fact. So how do you make sure it's lined up?

I have the back bracket off. I assume I need to do the allen screw on the transmission?
Does that need to come all the way out or just unloosened some?

Sorry for the slow reply had a crazy day today. My first thoughts are im not sure what Allen screw you're talking about. From below all you need to do is get the pin out so the linkage is disconnected. Then from the top side sitting inside the car (I'll re-read but I'm assuming you did already remove the console, **** and boot etc) there's a bracket that holds down the shifter assembly in place. Once it's removed the whole assembly should lift right out. Trying hard to remember and honestly I'm hoping someone can chime in in case I dont remember right.

Found 2 pics hoping they might shed a little light.

This pic shows the shifter about to be installed or removed (looks like the hurst ?)
