So, when is an LT5 no longer an LT5?
I guess this doesn't just pertain to the LT5, but at what point does the engine designation just become irrelevent?
With all of the modifications that are being done, 368, 396, 415, 427, turbos, single plane intakes, etc., when is the LT5 just no longer an LT5?
To turn the question around, define an LT5.

Ok, let me put it this way, GM has the LS1, LS2, LS6, and LS7. All are based on the SBC and save the LS7, all are 346 CI, valley cam, pushrod engines. So, why would they designate 4 different engine RPO's for them?
If the LT5 had made it through to the next round, what do you think the RPO would have been? LT6?
Just trying to see others thoughts on this.

Its always going to be a LT5 its just a larger cubed version nothing really changed.
Just like a LS1 is a LS1 if its in a camaro or firebird but the motor is different when its installed in a vette heads cam and so forth but its still a LS1

I think block and heads are usually the deciding factors here. For instance you could install LT4 heads, intake, and cam on an LT1 and I think most people would at that point consider it an LT4. The LT5 is the only engine in its family therefore it will always be an LT5.

But still, if you take the heads, port, polish, new big valves then bore and stroke the block to 427 cubic inches with a new crank, cams, and sheet metal intake.... can it really be called an LT5 anymore? I mean, it'd be sooo much more!

When it's only got one cam and and only 8 injectors like all those other wimpy motors out there...............then it's not an LT-5.........

My 2 cents on this, when the block and heads are no longer LT-5, then it is no longer an LT-5, especially this motor. All the mods are just machining at this point, correct me if I am wrong.
On another note, Lotus was not the one that limited this engine, it was Chevrolet with all their requirements, bore spacing, gas guzzler, epa mandates and so on. Lotus was working on releasing a 500 HP engine later in the program. The whole program was scraped due to cost of the engine, again, correct me if I am wrong.

actually, I have seen cars that were no where near as pretty as that be brought back to be bloomington gold winners.. its amazing what a particular vin number, a build list associated with a vin number, and a last recorded odometer reading being low can inspire in the early year vettes. Phrogs.. lets do it man..lol
